The winter months have been busy ones for the Tokyo Club. A special Tokyo "Anone, Wah Hoo Wah" goes to the Enrollment and Interviewing Committees for their hard work in the final drive to place outstanding Japanese students in the Class of '64. Spearheaded by Enrollment Co-chairmen NobuMitsui '43 and Bill Breer '57, we paid visits to the top high schools in the Tokyo Metropolitan area. Dave Hitchcock '50, Joe Stevenson '57, Kunio Katakura '595, and ChickOnodera '575 were other members who went on the search for potential Dartmouth men. After narrowing down the field to a select group of candidates, the Interviewing Committee, led by Steve Hibbs '57 and Irv Clark'56, took the ball. Takanaga Mitsui '15,Yoji Hirota '28s, Burton Martin '33, and Dave Tillotson 'go were among those who spoke with outstanding Japanese students at the Cultural Center in Tokyo. Barbara Hibbs and Jane Stevenson were invaluable as receptionists. We are looking forward with great hope to a few Tokyoite '64s.
Hartley Caldwell '23, our industrious Program Chairman, arranged a delightful evening of Chinese cooking and Caldwell Punch at the Benedictine Sisters' on January 22. Grace and George Van Petten '38, Dodo and Roger Haley '41 were equally perplexed at the enigma of the punch. It was difficult concentrating on the Sisters' demonstration of one of their famous dishes until the suspense was broken by Hartley's admission that the secret was the catalyst effect of the cucumbers. Mrs. Elizabeth Lo explained some of the finer points of the cooking to Ray Dickinson '37, as Marsha and Monk Bancroft '57 discovered that the cucumbers had the dual purpose of acting as a salad after the punch was gone. New faces were welcomed to our growing Club: Ed "Sorful" Jones '55 and wife Natalie, who are with the Air Force at Fuchu, and Tony Kreulen '55, who is in the insurance business in Yokohama. Yoji Hirota '28s brought his wife Kay and Miss Akiko Arishima as a guest; Lew Parker '38 told us of his new acquisition—a shining new Jag. The evening was concluded by Hartley's amazing overtures above 140° angle camera which was supposed to capture us all but did not quite make the last 30 degrees.
The Donald Bartletts '24 hosted the Club to a wonderful cocktail party at the American Embassy on January 29. Classmate Emilio Lanier '24 traveled from his business in Nagoya for the occasion. Others enjoying the Bartlett's fine hospitality were Kyoichiro Takeuchi '22, Mary and John Harmon '38, Masuo Iwanami '25, Don Geis '50, Barbara and Len Kokins '44. About forty attended and all will attest to the fact that this was one of the highlights of the season: Domoarigatoh, Bartlettsl
