Bill MacLennan and Pee-rade Drown wrote on the same subject "Carmel, Calif.," where Bill resides. A place where there are few sidewalks, paths veer to avoid trees; "Chicken Sales" continue in vogue; no jail, town sends offenders to Monterey and pays ten dollars per day for "keep"; used to pay one dollar per day but sheriff doesn't like those sent in from Carmel. What do you make of that?

Gladys Bergengren joined up with the Al Pratts at Sarasota, Fla., for a few days' reunion. Friendships formed back in college days which still hold. Gladys has decided on a trip in July sailing from San Francisco for Tahiti, Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand.

Sue Hanlon died March 17. You will recall her regular attendance at reunions with Meat and following his death she joined up with Anne Perry, widow of Cliff Perry '06. The two regularly attended all '03 and '06 reunions and made regular inbetween visits to Hanover. Sue was a generous benefactor of the college. She is survived by a daughter Marion (Mrs. Richard V.) Ellery and two grandchildren, Richard Ellery, Colby '61 and Susan Ellery who enters Vermont College this fall. The sympathy of the class goes out to them.

AG and Mariam Smith are back home in Binghamton, N. Y., after a trip to Honolulu to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary and to take a look at the new granddaughter near Los Angeles.

A few of us are at times called upon to be of direct service to the college. Mort French was one such. For years he served as Class Agent. He gave to that assignment a high sense of responsibility and endeavor which resulted in a most favorable showing over many years of class contribution to the Alumni Fund. The memory of the fine job which Mort did and of his own good self will long remain bright.

A nice letter from Harold Comstock. Still handicapped a bit from an operation of a couple years ago. Wife, Maude, who was hospitalized a year or so ago has responded in fine shape. Wish you both were not so far away and that some of the class could regularly drop in for a bull session and to discuss mustangs.

Commie also sent along some clips from a government magazine in which one learns that Wynne Matteson spends much of his leisure cultivating roses and is active in engineering societies and in the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Denver. Come on, Wynne, how about something for the class? That was a good picture which accompanied the clip. Might use it with your permission. Wonder if that will pull a reply.

Did you read in March 38 issue of Newsweek about Jack Jones, Princeton '44? A successful business man interested in many and diverse activities - "crewing" in big league yacht races; showing up at all Yale games; discoverer of valued artifacts in Indian mounds on Long Island; - all duly reported in Class Notes. Then came a sudden and tragic death while sailing off Point Judith. The class secretary announced that an obituary would follow in a later issue. There won't be any "memoriam" for Jack Jones was a figment of the imagination. Let Bob Carlisle, Class Secretary tell it "one of the limiting factors in writing up class notes is that I am never sure that any one reads them so I injected Jones to see if I would get any reaction. Not a soul reacted. It's disillusioning." Bob, this "see's" troubles are not in not being read but like Pliny the younger in getting classmates to write. Each month a certain amount of "malarkey" is added but never a comeback. But the "sec" does hear that the notes are read not only by the class but by others and that the baloney adds a bit of zest. Don't be disillusioned, Bob, your notes are read. If you don't believe it occasionally skip an issue. Apparently you can get contributions to your notes. Wish you would let this "sec" in on your secret.

As this goes to press, there has been no one named to be Class Agent. The college has been requested to send to all members of the class all notes about the Alumni Fund Campaign for this year. You should already be in receipt of material. Out of regard for "Mort's" memory, let's respond promptly and generously without further urging.

Secretary, 1822 Willow Rd., Cedar Village Camp Hill, Penn.
