Our sporadic informal luncheon meetings were successfully launched on May 26 at the University Club with Loring M. Jones'42, of DeKalb, Ill., as our out-of-town guest. Loring is with the DeKalb Agricultural Association, Inc. and came to Mexico on a ten-day business visit to contact the Maize Section of the Rockefeller Foundation here. Besides your chairman DanDaniell '24 and your secretary, the following alumni attended the lunch: John B. Pike'27, Albert L. Schumacher '31, Robert Macauley '27, Jesse S. Lichter '31, PhillipsBrooks '42, Mark Short '31, Harold L. Judelson '47, Richard D. McDonough '52,Robert C. Pike '54. Quite a turn-out considering that only a two-day notice was possible. We hope to repeat the occasion soon, perhaps in connection with the visit of another Dartmouth man (or men). Talk ranged from golf (John Pike was scheduled to play one of the top Mexican golfers) to the price of corn (we got expert advise on this topic from our visitor). Hal Judelson told us about his fascinating "safari" by car (eight primitive ferries must be used) to the Island of Mujeres (yes, it means women) off the Coast of Yucatan. He reports the best fishing and skin-diving anywhere in Mexico and an unspoiled primitive island that has Tahiti and the Marquesas completely beat. Please do not all rush at once to the "Isle of Females." Hal has promised to give Dartmouth men priority on his next expedition.
Turning to more serious topics, it was suggested that since Hanover reports being at this time "foreign service conscious," our Mexico group should try to get into the act. Phi! Brooks was commissioned to study the possibility of setting up an exchange of students, professors or lecturers between Dartmouth and the Mexican Universities. A fine project to improve Inter-American relations and that would also give our group some practical objective. With his cultural connections here, we expect Phil to handle this idea expertly. . . . And to close, LoringJones is taking Phil's and my own representation back to Hanover for the '42 twentieth reunion. Let's have the next one further South, eh?
On July 20 the United Nations personnel in Mexico gave a farewell party for Mark A. Short '32, who is being reassigned to UN Headquarters after having served here two years as administrative officer. He will be sorely missed. Among summer visitors were John M. Towle '59, who took a special course at the University of Mexico, and John A. Berggren '51, who came down on business connected his public relations work with the Eastman Kodak Company. I understand that he also took many photographs of Mexico (they must have the professional touch) with which he will be delighting his friends over the cold Winter months. Hasta la próxima.
The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Montreal migrated to Ontario for a summerouting at the home of Ed Hinman '35, where swimming, trap shooting, and fine foodwas enjoyed by all. Present were (I to r) top row, Bill Dodge '29, Hinman, JanetMiller, Dave Salter '53, Sine Dodge, Maureen Durot; bottom row, Helen Hinman,Cliff Miller, Marion Dodge, Claire and Donald Salter, George Durot, Marcel Durot'52 Michael and Jennifer Durot.
