With this issue comes the opportunity for me to wish you all a joyous Christmas holiday season on behalf of the '58 Executive Committee. It also seems an ideal time to thank the 390 '58s (58% of our class) who so generously contributed a grand total of $3,607.50 to the 1961 Alumni Fund. I think it entirely fair to emphasize the very significant role that Head Agent Stu Gord played in seeing that 99% of our original monetary objective was achieved. Many thanks to you, Stu, and to the many other agents and contributors who made this such a successful campaign.
"The work of the Church in Minto is advancing despite the inexperience of the Deacon-in-charge! It is wonderful and humbling to know this. It is humbling to see the Lord's work getting done over your mistakes, and wonderful to sense that as badly as you feel in making them, those mistakes pave the way of experience." These are the first words of a delightfully inspirational church newsletter that Dale Sarles recently circulated to the members of his congregation at the St. Barnabas Mission in Minto, Alaska as well as to many other areas of the world. Although Dale professes to be a "greenhorn in the Alaskan missionary enterprise," his letter obviously makes apparent his dedication to his appointed task and the faith in his convictions which are the mark of a great missionary. To repeat what was said in this column two months ago: We sincerely wish Dale the best of luck in this courageous venture.
News of many summer and fall weddings and engagements filled the mailbag this month. Among those who have recently taken the big plunge are Dave Connell, who married Walda Murphy of Fall River, Mass. Dave, who is assistant treasurer of Skelly Detective Services, Inc., was a cum laude graduate of Stonehill College and attended grad school at Notre Dame. Married in Pittsburgh were Gary Blanchfield and Lucy Straub of that city.
Finishing his tour of duty with the Air Force in Driffield, England is Lt. Rink DeWitt who married Dorothy Collins of Sarasota, Fla., in September. Wellesley Hills, Mass., was the setting for the September wedding of Dave Payne and Beverly Sanders. Serving his internship at Boston City Hospital after graduating from Harvard Med School is Dr. Pete Spiegel who recently married Peregrine Barclay of Palm Beach, Fla. To conclude this section, rumor has it that our class valedictorian, Jagwon Kim, is now married and living with his wife in Princeton, N. J.
Now to switch to recent engagements: Jack Gundy and Sally Howell of Easton, Pa., plan a Dec. 27 wedding. Jack's presently in his fourth year at Cornell Med School. A February ceremony is scheduled for Ev Lindgren and Lucinda Hodskins of Longmeadow, Mass. Stan Beiley and Marcia Ann Rubenstein of Albany, N. Y., recently made their engagement known. Stan's serving with the Army at Fort Dix, N. J., after having received his law degree from Columbia. A June Cornell law graduate, Phil Berke and Linda Brafman of North Adams, Mass., have likewise announced their engagement.
Other recently betrothed couples include Harry Johnson and Patricia Mercer of Philadelphia; John Durkin and Mary Esther Radell of Rochester, N. Y.; and Dick Pew and Julia Emerson. Dick was working with Underwood Corp. until recently when he was recalled to active duty with the Navy.
I received a swell note the other day from old coxswain Mori Mitsui who reports that he's back in New Haven to finish the remaining two years at Yale Architectural School. Among people Mori's run into of late are Fred Hart and wife who are living in Hamden, Conn., where Fred's a trainee with the Connecticut Light and Power Co. Mori described a September pack trip into the Presidential Range of the White Mountains with Fred Turner which really got me to remembering how beautiful New England can be in the fall. Incidentally, Fred is beginning his first year at Cornell Law School. Also at Yale with Mori are Tom Mapp in the Art School and Doug Richmond in the Architecture School.
I might finish up with a few miscellaneous items of interest: The Navy appears to have released Dave Rice after a long tour of duty as an officer. Dave, who is married to the former Nancy Garfield of Syracuse, N. Y., plans to do graduate work in city planning at the Univ. of North Carolina. A new instructor in history at Webster Academy is Jim Dwyer. Finally, recently appointed as a sales representative for Norton Co. in the Philadelphia area was Sam Hines.
Again, my sincere wish for a happy Yule and a successful New Year. Let's start it off with a flood of mail for Newsletter Editor Line Mitchell as well as this humble scrivener.
