A newspaper clipping tells us about a Tenner's fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration in our fiftieth reunion year. The fortunate couple is one which was in Hanover for part of the big reunion - Charlie Thomas and his wife, Mary. They were married November 24, 1910 in Philadelphia. They lived in Hanover the first year and their son was born there. While Charlie and Mary live in Bridgeport, Conn., they spent the week in New York. Luncheons and dinners—one of them a surprise affair, kept them on the jump in the metropolis, Brooklyn and Philadelphia. Our congratulations are a trifle delayed but they are just as sincere as though they were on schedule.
Ruth and Vic Willis have completed a seven-year assignment as Resident Manager for the J. G. White Engineering Corporation in New York, on the multi-million-dollar rehabilitation program for the city-owned power plants. They are now considering a two-year undertaking in India, on a 300,000 k.w. steam plant. Vic sure gets around but we had him all lined-up for next June's informal reunion in Hanover and this will mean he can hardly take time off to jump back from India. Keep your eyes open for tigers, Vic.
Uncle Sam's handling of mail sometimes baffles us. Mrs. Reuben Copp, at Andy Scarlett's suggestion, wrote your Chairman-Secretary from Lynnfield Center, Mass., December 15, giving some facts about Rube's life which would be used in the "In Memoriam." The letter reached me January 25. (The famous Pony Express could have done better.) Rube went with the A. T. & T. right after he was graduated with us. He retired in '52 with a record of 42 years' continuous service. He traveled around the country for the first twelve years, forecasting demand for future telephone service. On retiring he gave up his home in Westfield, N. J., where he had lived for thirty years, and returned to North Barnstead, N. H., to live in his ancestral home built a century and a half ago. He married Ruth Rand Billings, April 14, 1956. Rube's hobby was wood working, to which he later added painting. In St. Petersburg, Fla., where they spent the winters, he worked with the City Welfare Agency, repairing toys for Christmas distribution.
Herb Woods has taken on another community service, having been elected president of the Deep River (Conn.) Historical Society. For a man suffering from an old physical difficulty, Herb certainly has contributed a lot of energy for the good of his home town. Herb Coar writes that he left the cold of Boston and drove to Jupiter, Fla., arriving in time for Christmas dinner with his son's family. Temperature was 80 at the time - a much desired change from Boston's cold. Pevy Pevear who moved his antique business from Beverly to Ipswich, Mass., reports that "the new location is working out very well, that both are feeling fine," and invites us to "come and see us."
The time of the informal reunion in Hanover this year is the period June 12-14. If all the Tenners who were full of enthusiasm following the big 50-year event follow their expressed, good intentions, we should have a crowd which will break the record for informal Tenner get-togethers.
We learned late, that Harold Schulte's wife passed away and he was hospitalized for a while. Our sincere sympathy goes to him and we hope his condition has improved by now. More recently, we have been saddened by word from Andy Scarlett, that Marion, Hap Hinman's wife, who had suffered several setbacks during the past year, passed away at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital,. January 22. The Canaan Reporter paid splendid tribute to Marion. She and Hap organized the Bird and Garden Club in '39 and the newspaper's column devoted to the club's activities carried many paragraphs of appreciation of her graciousness, her helpfulness and especially her enduring without complaint the long and discouraging confinement in the hospital. Our sympathy is extended to Hap.
By the time this chapter of Tenner history is before you, the sun will be much higher in the sky and June will be close at hand. Plan now on reunion June 12-14.
