Bud Bombard was the subject of a story in The New York Times Magazine of Sunday, September 16. The occasion was Bud's role as a crew member of "Weatherly," the U.S. 12-meter yacht which defeated the Australian challenger "Gretel" for the America's Cup. The Times described Bud, who's an insurance broker in real life, as "a small, good-looking man with blue eyes and close-cropped, sandy hair; in fact, at 5 feet 5 inches and 140 pounds, he is the smallest and lightest aboard, and, as such, the man to go aloft to unthread snarls should they develop." Said Bud: "Sailing literally transports you. I've always enjoyed the sensations more than winning a race; winning has never been as important as going to sea. And this has become truer and truer for me. Nothing is abrupt in the motion of a boat. Everything is graceful and elegant. I can equate it with dancing, in a sense. It stokes the male ego. You get, I suppose, the feeling of the hairy-chested Norseman." The Times commented: "He said these things without affectation, but rather doubtfully — as though he did not quite expect to be believed."
