As this is being written we have no sign of spring and there is still snow on the ground, but a pleasant harbinger of the fact that there will be summer weather again this year was to read that Nelson Rockefeller had acquired a stock interest in the Binghamton Triplets (baseball) of the Eastern League.
Previously you read in the Wah Hoo Wah column that Nelson had received the gold medal of the International Benjamin Franklin Society in recognition of his outstanding leadership in the public service. To complete this account, it may be added that the award was made at a luncheon commemorating the 256th anniversary of Franklin's birth, and that other recent recipients include former President Hoover, Edward V. Rickenbacker, Charles F. Kettering, Dr. Detlev W. Bronk, Warren R. Austin and Dr. James R. Killian.
A brief release from New York's St. Luke's Hospital tells of the election of CliffMichel to its board of trustees. Cliff wields an important hand in New York's financial district, but seldom do any of his interests receive any publicity. He is a partner in Carl M. Loeb, Rhodes and Co., chairman and president of Dome Mines, Limited, and a director of several other mining, insurance and shipping organizations.
Dick Bowlen has been named chairman of the Keene, N. H., 1962 Heart Fund appeal, and will also lead the special gifts division of the effort. Dick is manager of administration at Markem Machine Com- pany in Keene.
Pennsylvania is redistricting its congressional districts and Herm Schneebeli, congressman from the 17th district, is expected to acquire some new constituents from Union County, formerly in the 18 th district. In his short time in Congress, Herm has earned the reputation throughout the Commonwealth as one of the most dedicated and hard working members of its delegation in Washington.
A note from Herb Chase indicated a major snow shoveling job had to be completed before he and Marge could get their car out and on the road for a month's vacation in Florida, to be devoted to sunshine, golf and rest. Likewise, Al and Babs Allyn enjoyed a midwinter trip to the Virgin Islands, Key West, and a visit with their older daughter who lives in Jacksonville.
Now for a try at analyzing a long feature story about Buck Steers from the December issue of "Sponsor," a publication previously completely "unknown to your correspondent, but which must be familiar to those of our number who are in the advertising profession. Well, it seems that Buck addressed the ANA convention in Hot Springs, and stated his belief that "Radio is very much 'with it.'" The president of Doherty, Clifford, Steers and Shenfield then is quoted as haying a very high regard for the value of radio versus TV in reaching certain selected audience groups, for example, he says - "As you walk down Fifth Avenue, or sun on the sand at Jones Beach, count the number of transistor radios you hear!" Buck is known to be quite articulate and is in demand as a speaker at advertising meetings; last summer he also filled in for the Herald Trib une's columnist writing "Along Madison Avenue." His agency seems to have an abundance of beer purveying clients, but they are widely separated. We see CarlHaffenreffer's Narragansett listed, as well as Jax and Wiedemann's. At one time Buck put one of our mutual friends into the Vitalis commercials on TV, which we are sure you have seen many times.
It is always a delight to hear from Rev.Wade Safford, and although much of our recent correspondence has had to do with the rather extraordinary number of deaths among our classmates, he also writes that he is finding life agreeable in the south counties of Maryland where he has a variety of intellectual levels to deal with in his parishes. He seems to be beset with all sorts of problems among the teenagers, and some among others who should be old enough to solve their own problems, but does not let these dim his affection for the human race.
Within a month or so of the time this appears in print, it is expected that a Class dinner will be arranged at the New York Dartmouth Club, and those of you in and around New York should soon be hearing from Charlie McDonough to this effect.
