BOSTON papers recently carried the news that Dartmouth eventually will receive more than $1,000,000 under the terms of the will of Orrin T. Hart of the Class of 1918. Bonds filed indicated an estate of over $1,100,000. The property is to be held in trust with all income shared by nine persons. The estate will go to Dartmouth following the deaths of these beneficiaries.
Mr. Hart never married. He was a financial consultant in the field of investment securities. He was a bridge expert and an official in bridge circles. At Dartmouth he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. A lifetime resident of Wellesley, he died on March 10, 1962.
While it may be some years before Dartmouth realizes a 100% income return from Mr. Hart's bequest, its importance can be realized in restating the fact that the College in all of its history has received but three previous bequests in the million dollar and up category: those of Leon C. Williams '15, Edwin W. Sanborn '78, and William N. Cohen '79. The great munificence of two other large benefactors of Dartmouth, Edward Tuck 1862 and George F. Baker, LL.D. 1927, was in the form of gifts.
