Work Begins on the New Pool
June 1962

Late this month ground will be broken in the east wing of Alumni Gymnasium for a new eight-lane swimming pool. The facility, pictured above, was designed by a former swimming captain, R. Jackson Smith '36.

The new pool will complement the present Spaulding Pool built in 1919. It will be 75 feet long, 60 feet wide, and up to fifteen feet deep. Besides the pool, there will also be six dressing rooms and seats for 1000 spectators.

Smith, a former A.A.U. diving champion, is with the firm of Eggers and Higgins of New York. His design includes two diving platforms, a one-meter board, a three-meter board, and another on a hydraulic lift to be used at either height.

Work has already started in the west wing of the gymnasium where the basketball court is being remodeled. The basketball court, with a permanent seating section, is scheduled for completion before November 1. The pool will be completed by late fall. These two projects were made possible by the funds raised in the College's successful Capital Gifts Campaign.
