Old 1962 is behind us. It was an important year for Dartmouth: the Hopkins Center was opened, the Alumni Fund set a record at $1,215,200, the football team went undefeated, and the College gained wide recognition for academic excellence. (It must be some added accomplishment to be able to list the "last two items together.) You know, all of these achievements actually seem almost commonplace after reading the literature from Hanover for a number of years. For everyone knows new buildings will go up, an Alumni Fund record will be set, and academic achievements will multiply again this year. A standard of exceptional progress has come to be expected at Dartmouth. Wish I could be so cocksure about the football team. In any case, it looks like another exciting year in Hanover.
The Class of Fifty-four has taken over the Dartmouth Club of Southern California. Don Des Combs is the president, PerryWeston is the assistant secretary, and TomCorcoran is the assistant treasurer. In other areas and other clubs, it seems that all Fiftyfours are the secretaries - seven of them: Joe Gruel in Grand Rapids; Ed Rowland in St. Louis; Bill Madden in Monmouth County, N. J.; Doug Hoskins in Harrisburg, Pa.; Dick Wheelock in Dallas; Bud Sique!and in Seattle; and Bill Jenkins in Mexico City.
Barry Cox has returned to his work as a helicopter pilot in Laos, after a short holiday with his family in New Hampshire. While Barry is working in Laos, his wife and son live in nearby Bangkok, Thailand. Another aviator, Navy Lieutenant George Hitchcock, is now teaching fledgling Naval aviators at Whiting Field, in Milton, Fla. Dr. LloydTepper is now in the division of operational safety of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Another public servant is Dr. WesDingman, an associate in research in the Laboratory of Neurochemistry of the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md.
A couple of lawyers were heard from this month. Hugh Connelly is an associate lawyer with Dawes and Dawes in Trenton, N. J. Ed Moore has the same title with Alexander and Green in New York City. Counselor Moore was recently married to the former Martha Katherine Beck Perky in New York. Ed Scott is a life underwriter for the Manufacturers Life Insurance Company in To- ronto, Canada, and Pete Townsend has been appointed director of personnel of the Celanese Polymer Company, a division of the Celanese Corporation of America. Pete, his wife, and two daughters live in Newark, N. J. In Lexington, Mass., Jim Tofias recently participated in a financial management development program with Raytheon Company. Chas Dorries is in Catskill, N. J., where he is General Manager of the Allied Boat Company. In Essex Fells, N. J., Cliff Evans is Treasurer of the Change Bridge Associates. Pete Gunas has moved on from Michigan State to be the registered representative of Shearson Hammill and Company in Manchester, Conn.
I don't remember if Jim Fisher's statistical expose of the Class of Fifty-four indicated how many of us are teaching. I am continually amazed at the number engaged in this worthy pursuit. Tom Morton is teaching English at Somersworth High School in (of course) Somersworth, N. H., and John Donahue is director of athletics and physical education coach at Nauset Regional High School, out on the Cape at Orleans. Mass. Professor Ed Horton is teaching at the University of North Carolina, in Durham.
I have been remiss in reporting a whole new batch of nuptial news. Much of it will have to wait till next month, though I will present a couple of items. Bob McKeever recently married the former Martha Wickes of Montreal. McGill graduate, Martha works with IBM in New York City, where Bob is an Assistant District Attorney on the Homicide Bureau staff. Some time ago, WaltAnderson married Eleanor Kask Berg.
Last month I threatened to answer some of your letters as a New Year's resolution. The year is still young. But don't let such a lazy approach affect your replies to DaveMandelbaum and Jack Feldman.
