Bob Maclellan and Rupe Thompson were elected to the Alumni Council at the June meeting in Hanover. Bob was elected for a three-year term as member-at-large and will serve on the Council's committee on the Alumni Fund. Bob is president of the Provident Life & Accident Insurance Co., which recently honored him for his 35 years of service to the company. Rupe will serve on the Council's committee on Class Gifts. He is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Tuck School. He was named chairman of the board of Textron, Inc., in 1960 after serving as its president since 1956.
Attending the Council meetings were CalBillings, Lane Dwinell, and Craig Haines, who have completed their terms of office, and also John Turkevich.
Our sources of information dried up shamefully during the New York City newspaper strike. One newsworthy item of that period which has just been brought to our attention is the appointment of Phil Orsi as a vice president of the First National City Bank on December 18, 1962. Congratulations, Phil!
The annual '28 golf outing, cocktail party, and dinner was held this year at the St. Andrews Golf Club, oldest golf club in the United States, at Hastings-on-the-Hudson on May 24. With Bill Heep as our host and Hank Walker as chairman of the reunion committee, everything was perfectly arranged. Thirty-six showed up, including '28's favorite magazine subscription experts, Kenand Fidelia Turner, and out-of-staters Howieand Caroline Bush of Wilbraham, Mass., and Roger and Alma Sundeen of Manchester, N. H. Others in attendance with wives were: Bavier, Al Carpenter, Drake, Field, Goodwillie, Hammesfahr, Hazzard, Keith, Sammis, Skinner, Joe Smith, Treanor, Van Riper, and Weser.
George Foster of Plymouth, N. H., is the author of a book soon to be published, "Eyes and Ears of the Civil War" dealing primarily with the newly formed Signal Corps of the Union Army.
J. F. ("Bondy") Bond's son, John, Norwich University '59, is back in the U.S. after three years in Germany and plans to make a career of the Army.
At the award ceremonies just before Commencement at Dartmouth last June, Jackand Pearl Phelan's son Jack was the recipient of the Timothy Wright Ellis Memorial Award established by the Class of 1955, and presented annually to the senior "who exemplifies those qualities which made Tim Ellis an inspiration to his associates. With his warmth of personality, his loyalty, perseverance and ability to use his natural gifts to the utmost in the many phases of his life at Dartmouth — Tim has left a lasting impression. He truly represented the ideal son of Dartmouth."
Summer visitors to Europe included Jimand Esther Campion and Esther's two daughters; the Jerry Goodwins (who sent us a card from Liechtenstein); the George Pasfields (where is your report, Suzanne?), and Herb and Dotty Russell, making their second trip in two years, this time to Germany and Austria. All of these travelers plan on attending the Oct. 11-12 reunion at the Norwich Inn. Hope you are planing on being there too - it's a wonderful weekend.
Last year at this time we had three weddings to report - this year we have a record-breaking roster of eleven. Craig andEleanor Haines' daughter Linda and Richard E. Cole were married June 22 in the First Parish Church, Milton, Mass. They will live in Guilford, Conn. Linda graduated from Simmons College in June.
Wayne and Jean Van Orman's daughter Jean was married May 25 to Robert F. Brown in Short Hills, N. J. They are living in London, where Bob is studying under a Fulbright Grant at the University of London. Jean and Bob are candidates for M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, respectively, in the department of art history and archaeology at Columbia University.
Makie and Anne Makepeace's daughter Joanna was married to Marshall C. Severance at the First Congregational Church, Marion, Mass., on August 17. They are living in Ashburnham, Mass., where Marshall is on the faculty of Cushing Academy. Joanna graduated from Duke University in 1962 and attended Katharine Gibbs last year. Okie and Grace O'Keeffe's son William '61 and Paul Jane Symmons were married August 17 at St. Bernard's Church, West Newton, Mass. Bill is a student at Boston College School of Law. A third wedding on August 17 was that of Marilyn Perkins and Dick Canton '57 son of Dickand the late Janet Canton, which took place at King's Chapel, Boston.
At a garden ceremony August 18 at the Norwich home of Bill and Elizabeth Ballard, their daughter Nancy became the bride of Lester Seigel. Nancy received a master's degree from Columbia, Lester, a graduate of is working for a doctorate at Columbia.
Hadley and Mavis Cantril's daughter Mavis was married to Donald M. Jansky '62 of Bethesda, Md., in the Church of Christ, Hanover, N. H., on August 31. Mavis graduated from Cazenovia College in June and Don graduated from the Thayer School.
Jack and Margaret Sugden's daughter Ann and Paul C. Plankey were married April 20 at St. Agatha's Church. Milton, Mass.
Tim and Virginia Paige's daughter Dare was married in June to Frank J. Farrington, Bowdoin '53. Dare graduated from Wellesley in 1959 and received her master's from Tufts University.
T. Michael Middleton, son of Eleanor andthe late Tom Middleton, and Joan Perkinson were married July 27 at the Evangelical Congregational Church in Hingham, Mass. Mike is a graduate of Yale and the Harvard Business School; Joan graduated from Colby Junior College. Bill and Bea Marx's son Bill '62 graduated from Tuck School in June and married Judy McGarry on August 17. He started law school at the University of Michigan on August 26.
Major Ray Hyman, USAF, has moved to 1323 Yosemite St., Colorado Springs, Colo. . . . Prof. Carter Woods of the Wells College worked last summer in the Latin American Workshop at Cornell.
Johnny Nixon's older son Jack started to work for him in July to help manage the expanding Nixon insurance agencies in Boston and Newtonville. Johnny reports that Red and Chili Edgar have been entertaining their daughter Carol and her three children for several weeks. Carol and her husband, who is English, live in England where he works for Johnson Wax.
Don Soils, National Accounts Coordinator for Cities Service Oil Co., moved his office from New York to Tulsa in September, increasing the '2B population of that city by 100%. Philo Grimes is a native of the city and also an oilman.
The '28 record in the Alumni Fund drive was wonderful — an accomplishment for George Emery and his team that sets new standards for us. You gave $38,285 and with only a few more contributors next year we have a good chance to win the Green Derby contest.
We regret to have to report the passing of two more loyal members of the Class, BudCorman who died in an airplane crash May 17 and Hank Leach who died of a heart attack J une 12.
