While the Dartmouth Club of Hartford is well into another active year under the vigorous leadership of President Dick Page '54, a bit of backtracking is in order. Last May a sporting event which is fast becoming one of the most popular of spring sports spectacles, and which boasts the biggest and best crowds in Dartmouth Rugby annals, was held at the Farmington Polo Grounds. This of course was the annual Dartmouth-Yale Rugby match during which the two teams vie for the coveted Hartford Cup. The Green staged a valiant show but were outrugged for the first time here. Ace promoter Culver Modisette '50 came within inches of having the game televised on a local channel, and by next season's bout this may well be a reality. Excellent direction by TedRice '52 and the help of a host of others made this the best day in the brief four year history of these matches.

At the annual meeting some weeks later, George Colton '35, Director of Development at the College, familiarized the gathering with the vast and expensive building program just completed in Hanover. Afterward the new slate of officers was elected. The '63-'64 directorate includes: Richard Page '54, President; Sherry Marchant '50, and Ted Rice '52, Vice-Presidents; Ron Driscoll '56, Asst. Program Chairman; Dick Watson '59, Secretary; Brint Schorer '36, Asst. to the Secretary; Ray Woolson Jr. '55, Treasurer; Roger Stephenson '60, Luncheon Chairman; Rich Fisher '41, Enrollment; and Bob Richman '39, Publicity.

The first of the new season's activities, the Freshman Luncheon, was held extremely successfully at the City Club (a new twist in itself) on September 4 with fifteen freshmen and their fathers attending. A total of 65 heard Steve Shipps '66, captain of the first year swimming team, give the new men his ideas of how the Dartmouth Spirit is acquired. Professor Al Foley '20, main speaker of the day, agreed with Steve and added many of his own thoughts as to why Dartmouth ranks as highly as she does today.

By now most of you are aware that the pre-Dartmouth-Yale Dinner, in addition to being a fine evening, was also the kickoff for Hartford's entry into the scholarship field. A substantial sum of money was given to the College then for use as financial aid to a deserving Hartford area student. CulverModisette '50 is the recent appointee to the position of Scholarship Chairman. It goes without saying that the Hartford Club raises a loud and long Wah Hoo Wah for SaxZieman '35 who so well spearheaded this program in its infancy. Sax and Culver both wish to remind you that our fund is far from its goal, and although Culver has some fine ideas in store, our collective support is still a must... if by chance your dues aren't in yet, they really are quite modest, you know. Treasurer Woolson is by now quite experienced at separating dues from scholarship donations on the same check.

The Hartford Club would like to congratulate Ed Perrin '38, for his recent nomination to a seat on the Alumni Council. Just prior to his gaining this honor Ed did another of his outstanding enrollment jobs for which he is famous even outside Dartmouth circles. Other leading colleges and universities are still trying to discover his secret.

If anyone who hasn't been to the last few luncheons would like to have his ear bent about the latest in Dartmouth plant, philosophy etc., just ask Dick Page '54 or DickWatson '59 to describe their recent trip to the Hanover Plain for the Club Officers Meeting. Be sure you have a few extra moments if you do get hold of them - they're extremely enthusiastic!
