The annual Fall reunion was blessed with good weather this year in sharp contrast with the pouring rain of the previous two years! In fact the drought was so severe that the usual big bonfire which is a Dartmouth Night tradition had to be omitted.
The Norwich Inn was our headquarters and after lunch our private bus whisked us to the entrance to the stadium and back again after the game. To make sure the '28ers at the game knew where to go after the game, Bill Morton was responsible for the following announcement which came booming over the loudspeaker at halftime: "The illustrious Class of 1928 whose numerals are emblazoned on the Baker Library is holding a cocktail party and dinner at the Norwich Inn after the game.. .."
Total attendance for the weekend was 100, with 55 at the post-game dinner. We had the Ranger Room at the Norwich Inn for our exclusive use both Friday and Saturday nights and it made a perfect reunion headquarters. For the superb arrangements for the whole weekend the class gave a vote of thanks to Reunion Chairman Herb Sensenig. Everyone had large name tags so there was no embarrassment about poor memories. Tim and Virginia Paige of Longmeadow, Mass., deserve commendation for bringing the whole family and two guests, Mr. and Mrs. Stan King, ten in all. The family included Tim Jr. '66, a varsity soccer player, their three beautiful daughters, Carolyn, Wellesley '64, Patricia Johnson and her husband, and Dare Farrington and her husband.
The meeting of the Executive Committee was well attended, in spite of the early hour Saturday morning. Present were President Morton, Treasurer Craig Haines, your Secretary, Newsletter Editor Jack Herpel, Ex-Presidents George Pasfield and John Phillips, and visitor Herb Russell. Treasurer Haines reported a safe cash flow and out of the deliberations came a vote for a seven-dollar dues tab. It was voted to invite BillHarris, our famed travel lecturer, to speak at the '28 Round-Up in January and we are happy to announce that he has accepted and that Dinner Chairman Hank Walker has arranged for the dinner to be held at the Dartmouth Club in New York on January 22. You fellows in the hinterlands should arrange a business trip to New York to encompass that date. Bill will speak on "Places in the Sun" - a timely topic, and show an excellent movie on Egypt. It was also voted to continue the Spring Party which has been so successful the last few years; HankWalker was asked to arrange the date and place. A vote of thanks was given to Georgeand Sis Emery for their leadership and untiring work as Class Agents for the past four years.
In addition to those mentioned above, the following were present at all or some of the weekend events, with wife: George Bell, Howie Bush, Jim Campion, Son Middlebrook, George Davis and daughter Beth, Larry Kenney, Art Kneerim, Red Edgar, Jerry Goodwin, Ham Hankins, Bill Hobson and son Bill '66, Mutt Jennings and son Charles '66, Jack Kenerson, George Klein who came the greatest distance - from Pittsburgh, John Lawrence, Makie Makepeace, John Nixon, Budd Maring with guests Mel and Sophia Howie and Judge Everett and Mrs. Scherer, Jack Phelan, Babe Shaw, Walt Simpson, Bill Treanor, Brougham Wallace, Al Willey and guests Mr. and Mrs. Clark, and Wes Wood. We were also happy to have Betty Breyfogle with us.
Three days after speaking at our New York class dinner, Bill Harris leaves on another 75-day world cruise on the "Rotterdam." While in India he will fly to Pakistan and by car drive through the Khyber Pass to Kabul in Afghanistan for American Express with the idea of opening it for tourists who like something off the beaten track. Bill gave a lecture in Town Hall, October 3, and since has spoken in Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Wilmingon.
Many of us had the pleasure of meeting Art Kneerim's lovely bride at the Fall Reunion. She was Lee Wilcox, Vassar '47, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward B. Wilcox of Winnetka, Ill. She has recently been an editor of House Beautiful magazine. They were married Nov. 3, 1962. Art is advertising promotion manager for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.
Joe Tidd was elected October 7 to the Representative Town Meeting in Hamden, Conn., for a two-year term. Joe, a Republican, received more votes than any of the other five representatives elected from his district.
Gordon Graham should tell us how he happened to be the oldest recipient of the B.A. degree at Dartmouth's commencement last June. We spotted his name under the heading "Qualified since last year's Commencement" in a College publication. As we recall it, Gordon was in line for the commencement procession in 1928 when he was informed he had failed to get the required number of points for graduation. Could it be you didn't want your son David '65 to get ahead of you, Gordon?
Merrill and Grace Hodsdon's son Bill and Miss Mary Emma Berry of Mt. Airy, Philadelphia, were married Oct. 12 in Philadel- phia. They will live in Wilmington, Del.
Larry Keimey's daughter Alison, Smith '61, got her M.A. in Education at Yale in 1962 and is teaching English at Newton High, Newton, Mass. Carol, Smith '5B and Radcliffe '59, is in the personnel department of the Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco.
Yic Liddle was injured fatally when his car struck a bridge abutment just outside of Glens Falls, N. Y., at 5:30 P.M. on October 21. He was alone. Vic was active in Glens Falls civic affairs and was a candidate for the city council. The Glens Falls Post-Star closed its editorial tribute by saying: "Many men, we daresay, have done as much or more. They were admired. But Mr. Liddle was also liked. As a merchant, he operated a store known to thousands in this area and to visitors from everywhere. Everyone seemed to know the Ridge Book Shop and its courteous, accommodating proprietor. Vic Liddle had a talent for making friends and a deadpan humor constantly on tap. Many will miss him for various reasons. One of the chief ones will be the sheer pleasure of talking to him."
The deepest sympathy of the Class goes to Hesper and their children.
Phil and Helen Orsi have a grandchild, Pamela, born Oct. 1.
See you at the New York '28 round-up January 22.
