Some arrived on a beautiful day at Middle Mass, The Inn, or Motor Lodge on Thursday, June 13 for the Fabulous Fiftieth. Those arriving early had dinner with Chairman Bill Towler at the Inn (fourteen of us).
Registration at 104 Mass Hall started in earnest Friday morning, and sight seeing of new buildings and reuning continued until the first scheduled event, the cocktail party in the popular Tavern Room at the Inn. Line and Lucy Wilson were host and hostess. A delightful affair preceding filet mignon or lobster at Thayer Hall, the get-together informal dinner. Two showers during the afternoon did not dampen any spirits.
All moved on to President Dickey's home for the reception, arriving ahead of the senior class, their parents, and guests. It was a beautiful setting in their garden. Some attended the Glee Club Concert at Spaulding Auditorium in Hopkins Center and others watched the excellent performance of Archibald MacLeish's prize winning play J.B. in Center Theatre. The young fry attended the dance in Alumni Hall. And so to bed on the first day of our 50th Reunion.
Saturday morning dawned cloudy but cleared now and again. The Class pictures were taken at the steps of Webster Hall and all moved across the street to Rollins Chapel for the Memorial Service conducted by Rev. Ben Fay Andrew, assisted by Rev. Wilbur Bull '09 and Prof. Edmund Booth '18. Alan Bart Shepard was organist and two arrangements of the late Mose Ewing were used. A simple and most impressive service for the 164 classmates who have died during the 50 years.
The remainder of Saturday morning was given over to general reuning while waiting for the Class Dinner at Alumni Hall in Hopkins Center, the first class dinner to be held there. It was one of Jim McFate's famous rib roast buffets.
President Line Wilson thanked HaroldRansom for the beautiful red roses gracing the buffet table, and introduced those at the head table not speaking and those at the table immediately in front. We paid tribute to the championship 1962 Football Team through Coach Bob Blackman and Capt. Bill King who made wonderfully enjoyed speeches. Through Warner Bentley we paid tribute to those who planned and completed the marvelous Hopkins Center. BillTowler read the Class Awards, citations for the grandfathers of ten or more grandchildren, written by our own Henry Wads-worth Towler, and one to "T.D." Jewett for his first great-grandchild. To WardeWilkins, "All-American Secretary Dartmouth 1913," he presented from the Class a most gorgeous desk clock inscribed on a gold band.
President Dickey arrived at this time and spoke to us giving us more "firsts" which the Class of 1913 enjoyed at this 50th, a greatly appreciated message. Clarence Meleney talked for the Class giving us the "Hello Rosa! Hello Papa" and Alfred Noyes' "The Wayfaring Man" with other reminiscences.
Jack Chipman 1919 explained our recording of our Sing Along, the first class to do this, following our class meeting. New officers elected at the meeting together with reports will appear in the Class News Letter. The recording of our 1909-1913 songs with banjo accompaniment by Jack Childs 1909, and the piano of John Chipman was most successful. Each song was played back proving not only how well we could sing but that the Hopkins Center recording equipment is the finest. Alumni Hall was arranged for the cocktail hour with BillTowler and Andy Comstock as hosts. Many left early for the Commencement dinner at Leverone Field House where Jeanette Gill of the Dartmouth Dining Association fed literally thousands.
The meeting of the General Association of Alumni followed and 1913 had won both the 1894 Commencement Cup and the 1930 Cup for largest number of members back. President M. Carter Strickland '29 of the Alumni Council presented to WardeWilkins a citation and replica of the Wentworth Bowl as the Alumni Award. Dr. T.Don Cunningham of Denver gave the 50-year address to the seniors, their families, and the alumni. It was a splendid message, not long, but every word counted. Peter M. Sterns '63, secretary of the graduating class, spoke for that class.
While Commencement Day dawned overcast there was not sufficient moisture or showers to move the graduating class, honorary guests, faculty, honor and graduate students, 1913, and other alumni from the Baker Library lawn to the Leverone Field House. We marched in to our reserved seats ahead of the Class of 1963.
The brunch at the Outing Club was a farewell gathering for some, but many, probably 60, went to Jessie Cone's home in Norwich for tea at 4 o'clock.
Many had been packing and leaving for home since early morning but about 30 had decided to stay until Monday and drive home in comfort. A dinner, anything you wanted to order, had been arranged at the new Montshire Restaurant in West Lebanon and it turned out to be one of the most delightful gatherings of the reunion.
All felt that this had been the most friendly and interesting reunion of all our ten (there was no fifth which could really be called a class reunion due to World War I). See you all at the 55th and at all our fall parties in Hanover.
