Somebody pulled a fast one! Here I am, sitting with a monopoly on the Birthday Card business, and "Wot oppens!" I get a flock of Birthday Greetings! In lieu of individual replies, may I take the liberty of this wholesale acknowledgement to all for the nice and unexpected gesture with a genuine "Thanks to you all!"
By now, Questionnaires for the 50-Year Book are well in the works. The few not yet returned are herewith importuned to "get 'em in" before it is too late. (That second mailing with a "duly stamped" return envelope occasioned quite a few appropriate wisecracks!) And another reminder to give your whole and undivided attention to JackBowler's Reunion mailings as they reach you.
Excerpts from hither and yon reveal varied comings and goings and doings of classmates that help keep your scribe in business. Dole Anderson, down at Coral Gables, points out that Miami is now only a stone's throw from New York, providing some good old sunshine and balmy weather when wintry winds come along. The EbenCloughs are quite steamed up about "their boy" they are sponsoring - one Hank Cowles, fresh out of Exeter and enrolled as a freshman at Hanover, who pitched a remarkable final game at Exeter to end up there in a blaze of glory. Eben and Margie took in the Richard Hovey reunion back in May, at which Geo. Liscomb '07 ran the party. Later on, Eben joined with NorvieMilmore at their 101st U.S. Engineers reunion at Old Orchard. Eben reports the campus in Hanover was a revelation this summer, green and beautiful as a result of the large sprinklers previously installed there. Eben, working on our 50th Reunion team, says they don't furnish postage stamps - only to those going back to Reunion! Bud Doe, as a gardener, is also quite a trapper — to keep ahead of marauding denizens of the field. His tally this summer was 5 raccoons, 4 woodchucks, a skunk, a neighbor's cat, and one of their own ducks. Tex says: "What a fur coat I could have made for Reunion!" Pete Pray and CarlGish recently corralled this writer for lunch up in the clouds atop the Chase Manhattan building. Stock market chatter was temporarily sidelined for more important class affairs. Pete spends a good share of his summers at his Madison, Conn., place and Carl steals a few days off now and then (mostly then) for a trip to the home office in Denver. A report from the mid-summer luncheon at Pur cell's Eatery, Boston, brought '15ers Barker, Foster, Norwood, and Clough to the festive board along with '13ers Steele, Shumway, and Wilkins. All had iced coffee, except Eben, who had iced tea! Barker reports the Simpsons down on the Cape for the summer and Chan entertaining his great- grandson and granddaughter for a few days. A recent snapshot pictures a congenial gettogether of Joe Harris, Joe Comstock, and Shorty Gray at a September cook-out in Shorty's back yard at San Diego. Milt Ghee, out in California, comes up with a bit of reminiscent chatter, back in those halcyon days at Palmer Stadium, between him, as quarterback, and yours truly, as fullback, anent some few yards needed for a first down against Princeton. (P.S. We made it!) Dick Merrill still gets around. Although retired and living in Cincinnati, it is noted that he preached at the Central Congregational Church in Newtonville, Mass., back in August. A news clipping tells of the retirement of Hal Pinkham after 23 years as the Milton, N. H., postmaster. An account by Hal of our 40th Reunion in 1955 contains interesting references to many classmates encountered during that memorable occasion. Thus are some '15ers present and accounted for!
We regret to report the death of "Jiggs"Donahue in France back in June. His passing recalls to a lot of us what an aggressive goalie he was back in our hockey days. Notice of his death was received in a sympathetic letter from the hospital chaplain there.
The Roy Laffertys, on a recent visit to Hanover, helped cement relationships by a pleasant evening with Elvie O'Hara and Kathryn Child.
Joe Harris gives us some West Coast items. His brother George '21 and wife, visiting with their son George Jr. '50, took advantage of the trip to see all of California, plus Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia and the scenery "made them homesick for New Hampshire." Dartmouth won the attendance prize at the Ivy League golf tournament at Torrey Pines with 40 of a total attendance of 100 from every Ivy college. "Through luck of the draw," Joe won some handsome highball glasses, jumbo size (duly christened, no doubt). ShortyGray represented his church at the national Presbyterian convention in Columbus, Ohio, and took advantage of the trip for a vacation jaunt East to visit their children and grandchildren. Joe says they returned all pepped-up to renew "our perpetual bridge tournament and dinner parties."
The recent news release about Al Bradley's 1915 Scholarship Fund for the Medical School gives us all a warm feeling, particularly as it sets an example for several other new two-year schools now in process of organization.
Ralph Sawyer reports he is due for retirement this year as vice president for research and dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies at University of Michigan. He will take up, as a temporary activity on a half-time basis, the directorship of the American Institute of Physics located in New York just off the United Nations Plaza. Ralph intends to handle the job on a commuting basis, making about three trips a month from Ann Arbor to New York. (Local commuters — take note!)
The Johnny Pendletons, traveling in their mobile "home-on-wheels," surprised some of the Cape Codders with a drop-in visit during September, giving Jack Burbank, HalClaflin, Warren Montsie and Bess Barker(Dale was away) a conducted tour of this novel means of transportation. (Dale says he may be propositioned to get Bess one for Christmas.)
“Buster" Sawyer says their cabin in Wolfeboro, N. H., overlooking the lake and mountains is open to all classmates. (The line forms on the right!)
With a Happy Thanksgiving to everybody, here's a neighborly thought: After preaching his heart out about a great commandment, the preacher asked Deacon Jones if he loved his neighbor. "I try to," said the Deacon, "but she won't let me."
