Now this monthly task is becoming not only interesting and enjoyable, but also very easy. And that's because almost every day I'm receiving letters from 63's all over the country. With information sources like these, this column is guaranteed to be stuffed with news each month. So, to get started
Geoff Murphy writes that Tuck School is still there, that he's thriving in the Hanover winter, and that he's rather surprised at the many names in these lines which he finds are new or dimly-remembered classmates. Geoff worked in New York last summer with the same firm which has taken the chance of hiring him for the past several years - Price Waterhouse. He plans to return there after a summer in Europe this June, but there's still time to decide.
I was in New York a few weeks ago and saw Adam Heyman and Morrie Kramer. Adam tells me that he and Marty Mintz are finding Columbia Business School "manageable" and from the way Adam looks, he thoroughly enjoys The City and its activity. Morrie is at Harvard Law so we had a nice evening running through a few complaints and sympathetic grumblings about law school and its work load.
Sherm Bendalin writes from that city also, working as a commercial bank trainee with a large bank there. He has just moved in with Brown and Lafayette grads in the heart of the high-rent district near Central Park.
John Kubacki also checked in, telling me of his summer travels which resulted in work with Republic Steel in Cleveland. He's working as an accountant with that giant firm and, as he says, plans to leave there fairly quickly for study at Columbia School of Business this month. Eccy 38 just didn't seem to be enough.
Bill Breetz also sent word that he's over in Munich with the "Red Lion" Battalion after spending 18 weeks of training at Fort Sill. His address is a mouthful, but here it is: Bill Breetz — 05016442, Arty. 1193, ASG to HHB. Ist BN, 35th FA, APO 29, New York, N. Y. After all that, we'd better write. Tim Kraft, who wrote to check in and get a few addresses, sent word that he's off to Guatemala with the Peace Corps and a community development project. He can be reached at the American Embassy, Peace Corps, Guatemala City. One of the first men I met when I reached the College that Freshman Week over four years ago was Tom Brownell who wrote me of his latest escapades on the Atlantic Missile Range and Grand Turk Island. He wrote on stationery that has to be seen to be believed. It's covered with missiles, a track chart, and is probably "borrowed" from Pan American World Airways, the firm with whom Tom is working as a Security Policeman. Pan Am, Tom tells me, maintains all the tracking and testing facilities for the rocket and space probes fired from Cape Kennedy. Grand Turk is seven miles long and about 100 miles northeast of Cuba. It's a British possession, Tom continues, so in addition to a fascinating job on a warm tropical island, he gets a good refund on his pay from the tax people. If anyone happens to stop by that range station on Grand Turk, Tom will be both surprised and mighty happy to see you.
I'd like to send the best wishes of PhilBender to Denny Emerson, Phil's roommate while he was at the college, and Jack Beaton, a friend with whom he's lost contact. Phil is now at the University of Connecticut majoring in Economics but his interest in the Green is as strong as ever.
Bill Steck '3l sent along word from Cleveland that Ted Morehouse married Sandra Scott in that city in December. She's a Skids girl but will be with Ted up in Hanover at Tuck for the duration. I have to add this - virtually every time that Ted had a date up in Hanover my roommate, SteveLippman, and I thought that she was the best-looking girl on campus. From what I understand, Sandy is the most beautiful of them all. It must have been quite a Christmas around the Morehouse home.
Also along the marriage trail: Bill Manbeck was wed to Mary Gilson of Port Royal, Md. Bill probably is in the service by now; Mary is still studying at Bloomsburg State College.
Engagements continue to roll in. Bill Russell, our Head Class Agent, has announced his engagement to Patricia Ann Thomson, like Bill, a New Jersey native. Pat's a graduate of Colby Junior so it won't be too far to Tuck School where Bill is booking up a storm. By the way, Bill has already sent out notification to his assistant class agents across the country to enlist their help m the fast-approaching Alumni Fund Drive, the Fiftieth in the College's history. As Bill mentioned in his letter, if you have received word from him and have preliminary quests, let him know.
Bob Goldberg also acquired a fiancee, che's Carole Ann Greenberg, a Smith gradate from West Hartford, Conn. Bob stayed n in Hanover to continue his interest in music and conduction of the Freshman Glee Club Carole is with an insurance company in Connecticut but plans to join Bob in Hanover while he continues his graduate work in music. By this writing, they probably will be married; if Bob sends me word I'll know definitely. .
Another '63 engaged is Dave Collyer who also remained in Hanover when he had a „ood chance to leave town last June. Dave" is eneased to Irene Ann Kimball, a student at Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing. She'll graduate next year, so Bob will stay close while working with the Dartmouth Printing Company doing advertising and layouts for the college's magazines.
Whitney Boyd if Harvard Law relinquishes some of its demands on him. Anne graduated from Bennington in June and now is studying at Columbia and the New School. Tom Kraig plans a June wedding to Anne
An unusual honor came the way of GaryCrippin and Dick Douglass recently, for their efforts in cooperation with two Thayer School students. They produced a motion picture report illustrating a project performed last spring which involved the design of an improved production process for a card manufacturer in Vermont. Gary and Dick received a share in the Industrial Management Society's award for the film entitled "Methods Improvement Laboratory."
Finally, this month I have the sad duty of reporting the death of Mark B. Schunke in an automobile accident in Readfield, Me., late in December. In next month's issue, I'll write further of this tragedy, but may I extend the sincere sympathies of the class to Mark's parents and brother.
This picture taken at the Woodway Country Club in Darien, Conn., shows the alumniat the wedding of Kent Graham '62 and Beverly Young. From the left: Andy Perkins'38, Jack Graham '38.
