The passing of Rosetta Edson, after a long illness on February 27, 1964 at the home of her son, Lefferts P. Edson '34, in Southhold, N.Y., brings back many memories. When we first arrived in Hanover in the fall of 1898 we found that in track circles the name of Steve Chase '96 was almost a legendary one because of his brilliant achievements over low and high hurdles. The next spring it began to be rumored that our class too might be able to show a hurdler who could emulate the accomplishments of the fabulous Steve. That was Pearl Paine Edson, and the history of the following years proved that the rumors were true. We had every reason to be proud of him as he rose to be captain of the track team our senior year.
After college, he was married to Rosetta H. Lefferts in Newark, N.J., June 19, 1907, and together they were present at nearly every 1902 Reunion until he died forty years later. Since then Rosetta has continued to show her loyalty to Class and College in many ways. Her daughter-in-law writes, "She always took such an interest and pride in her husband's class." We were well aware of this, and though on this Golden Anniversary of the Alumni Fund, Rosetta is no longer with us to make a memorial gift in Pearl Paine's name, they both will live in the hearts of many of us.
