Once more ye neophyte sec'y takes typewriter in hand with a modest bag of notes from which to make news. Bill Steck's Newsletter bulges with information; let us hope that this column may do the same as time marches on. What I need at this time is more informers. Please take note, on paper, addressed to me.
Tower Snow of Phoenix, Ariz., observed his 20th anniversary with Connecticut Mutual Life in August. Tower is a member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He is also serving Dartmouth by being president of the Dartmouth Club of Phoenix.
The list of promotions and advancements of thirty-oners continues. Fred Tetzlaff was elected vice president of chemicals producer Rohm and Haas Co. of Philadelphia. Dr.Joe Rushton is now Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology in the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine of the University of Minnesota at Rochester. Frank Gavan, with Armstrong Cork since 1933, was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors for American Society for Testing and Materials.
Our own Sam Groves, president of UnitedCarr, Inc., since 1957, has been elected president of the 53,000 member M.I.T. Alumni Association for the current year. So, you can see Dartmouth has talent to spare.
Shep Wolff sent along a couple of notes from Dr. Saul Sherman and Ernie Moore. Saul states he took time out from his busy medical practice to journey to Europe this summer. Saul's son Stephen is a second-year medical student at Hanover.
Ernie Moore seems to be taking part in a re-enactment of the Battle of White Plains. I would like to hear more about this, with maybe a picture on Ernie in his Minute Man uniform. Sounds intriguing.
Fred Slaughter writes he is shipping me the four bound volumes of the Daily Dartmouth 1927-1931 - prepaid! I'm sure they will fit under my bed nicely but I haven't talked to Trudy about it yet. She may have other ideas.
Jim Swift has been great about writing notes. He stopped at Hartford City, Ind., to see Ollie Hedstrom who is in the custom stereo and hi-fi business. I do wish Ollie lived a little closer to North Easton. I could use some professional advice on the appalling array of equipment I am hooking up in my new music room downstairs.
Jim is beating the bushes trying to flush out a platoon of assistant agents. His letters indicate to me a great deal of awe of SherGuernsey and Sher's great triumph last year. I wrote to Jim, stating that we now have to demonstrate that Sher is only human after all. He had his day of glory, well earned. What Jim will do is to show Sher that he was just the beginning of a trend, and that there are bigger things to come from '31.
Jim, of course, needs all the help he can get, and, most of all, he needs the kind of help a guy can give when he writes to Jim asking "What can I do?" rather than waiting for the invitation to assist. Take the initiative, classmates. Get in touch with Jim before he contacts you, and offer him your services.
Prexy John Benson, Johnny Boermeester and Shep Wolff together with wives, were scheduled to join Trudy and me on a September Sunday for drinks, dinner and counsel, but Shep was called out of town suddenly. Probably somebody wanted to buy some gas. Now we are maneuvering for another date. Frankly, between us all, mates, I still don't know what I'm doing. This typewriter is running off at the mouth, almost uncontrolled. If any of you past secretaries have any advice, or little tricks of the trade to reveal, please advise.
Have a nice Thanksgiving, all.
