When - and if - you peruse this purple prose, snow will be blanketing the football fields. But cherished memories of an exciting season will linger on, especially for the many Twoters at the games. You were there, but you are not listed! Sorry, man, but who'd know you now that you've finally found identity and look so cool with that new beard and your fluffy hair-do. Among our many, looking happy, healthy, and completely normal, were: Roy and Dorothy Ball, Bob and Lois Booth, Ike and Hat Miller, Len and Margaret Morrissey, Russ Putney, Oscar and Bea Rice, and Jack and Sylvia Taylor at the kick-off with New Hampshire.
And at Holy Cross: Roy and Dorothy Ball, Judge Tony and Eleanor Hanlon, Dr. John and Pat McKoan, Jack and Sylvia Taylor.
At least 35 of our clan were in Hanover for the Penn game: Mike and Laura Adams, Ray and Doris Atwood, Roy and Dorothy Ball. Bob and Lois Booth, Ted and Babs Davidson, Jack Dodd, Carter and Alie Hoyt, Ed and Marian Lane, Al Lyon, Bill and Betty Mann, Ike and Hat Miller, Len and Margaret Morrissey, Olie and Louise Olsen, Russ Putney, Oscar and Bea Rice, Ozzie and Lucille Siegfried, Spenny and Marge Smith, Jack and Sylvia Taylor, Ralph and Mildred Totman.
At Hahvard, '22 had its usual unpredictable espionage agent. But his memory is sliping and his speling is lousey, so this year we added a counter espionage operator. Darned if they both didn't come up with the same list (bet they got together after the game): Mike and Laura Adams, Ray and Doris Atwood, Bob and Lois Booth, Bob and Grace Clark, Haskell and Harriet Cohn, Ed and Marian Lane, Fran and Lucy Leland, Ike and Hat Miller, and Ced and Emma Porter.
Any additional omissions or mistakes are entirely due to Bob Blackman and Mickey Beard. If they'd only told us what they were going to do next on each play, our agents could have occasionally taken their eyes off the field.
Major General Walter I. Miller, our Ike, is now assisting J. Michael McGean '49 in his work as Secretary of the Dartmouth Alumni College Association. Miller's appointment was announced October 12 when McGean was named Secretary of the College. Presumably, no Twoters' will have to submit S.A.T. scores and preparatory records for admittance to Alumni College. And maybe we'll have choice classroom seats, front row center or rear row extreme corners, depending upon whether you want to talk, listen, or doze. Congratulations and best wishes from '22 to both Mike and Ike.
Chris and Helen Suttmeier now have their son Pete '63 and his wife Merle back in the U. S. after his teaching for two years at Chung Chi College. A DP A Fellow (Dartmouth Project Asia) Pete, according to a report from the William Jewett Tucker Foundation, has now begun his graduate work at Indiana University.
Earl and Rhoda Fredericks visited Hanover in early autumn. This was Freddy's first return in many years and he was impressed to say, "Much of the old remains but the additions are staggering." After an active career in merchandising with F. W. Woolworth and Butler Bros., Freddy now lives in Winter Haven. Fla., where he takes an active part in community and economic affairs.
Wayne Shirley makes commendable and conscientious efforts to locate "lost" members of our far-flung tribe. From him comes the sad report that Edward R. Stevens died September 1963 in a Bronx hospital. Ed was with us freshman year. We have no record of his subsequent career. He left no known survivors and interment was in Lisbon, N. H., near his birthplace.
A report that Gordon E. Varney Jr. passed away in September has likewise been sadly received and will be further noted In Memoriam in this or a subsequent issue.
Dr. George E. Brooks and his good wife Bessie should be - and undoubtedly are proud of their son George E, Jr. Springfield papers report young George, assistant professor of history at Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., as the recipient of a $10,560 grant from the Ford International Program for a research-project in Africa. The project extends from September 1965 to August 1966 and its title is, "Trade on the Windward Coast of West Africa in the 19th Century: The Role of African Merchants on the Island of Goree." The research includes residence in Goree and reference work in the Public Record Office of London, the British Museum, and the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University.
The press adds. "Dr. Brooks, whose father, Dr. George E. Brooks Sr., teaches English at Springfield College, was graduated from Springfield Classical High School, Dartmouth College ('54), and received his M.A. from Boston University in 1958 and his Ph.D. in 1962. He is married to the former Mary Catherine Crowley of Springfield and they have two children, George E. 3rd and Douglas."
Fair enough, but historically inadequate. The newspaper fails to mention that young Dr. George is still remembered in Springfield as an outstanding boy and one of the best caddies ever at Longmeadow Country Club, that his brother Edwin Willis Brooks was likewise graduated from Dartmouth '57 and has done postgraduate work in Russian at Leland Stanford and at the University of Moscow, and that dear old Dad was Dartmouth 22. And this Class is proud indeed to have the Brookses in its clan. In fact, as a contribution to our class news, possibly Bessie will write for us, "How to be at Ease with Ph.D.'s."
Spenny Smith is responsible for all this good news about the Brooks family sent along, as other sources report, sometime after Spenny and Marge returned from a visit to their daughter Cynthia and her family in Atlanta. Our thanks to Spenny, yet also our envy, because he together with our other Springfield classmates. Bob Baldwin,Max Budnitz, and Harvey Moses, are so darn proud in seeing their local Gene Ryzewicz at Dartmouth that - well, if you have any more of the same, please send along without delay.
Gene and Jeanette Hofchkiss have a charming new granddaughter, the child of Gene 3rd ('50), dean of Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, Calif., and his wife Suzanne. The new young lady is the seventh Hotchkiss grandchild. Sorry, folks, but with increasing competition higher scores are necessary and a minimum of eight is now a prerequisite for admission the Class qualifying round.
A short stop in Hanover by Fran andLucy Leland some months back was the occasion of an impromptu get together with Olie and Louise Olsen, Ike and Hat Miller, Oscar and Bea Rice, Len and Margaret Morrissey. The luncheon became notably memorable when Olie had to break away to conduct his last class in 36 years at Tuck School. May he and Louise enjoy many grand years ahead.
It was also noted the Lelands were to have their 42nd wedding anniversary on October 24, one day after the Harvard game. Nobody thought to ask him if they went to the game 42 years ago. Anyway, Dartmouth won that day, too, 16-0.
"Oh, to be in England now that April is there" and that's where Bill and Betty Mann spent last spring. Their trip included, of course, an overnight stop at Dartmouth Castle which guards the mouth of Devon's beautiful river, the Dart. This geographical dividend is sent to you as a year-end extra for how many of us ever knew where either the Dart or the Mouth came from.
Lawrence T. Barnett's wife Elizabeth writes: "I wish to express my gratitude to the Class of '22 for the gift to the library of a book in memory of Lawrence T. Barnett. I also express the appreciation of the other members of the family."
Apropos memorial books, ALUMNI MAGAZINE subscriptions and similar activities, Carroll Dwight appreciates the cooperation of all Twoters who have sent in their class dues. To those who have not yet done so, Carroll is still paying taxes at 111 Laurel Road, Chestnut Hill, Mass. 02167.
A few new addresses: J. Regan Brown, Aldrich St., East Northfield, Mass.; Louis A. Gluek, 1501 Washington Ave. N., Minneapolis, Minn.; John C. Hazeltine, Route 3, Morris Neck, Cambridge, Md.; Edward A. Laycock, Box 346, Wellfleet, Mass.; Winthrop DeF. Piper, 260 Roxbury St., Keene, N. H.
Now gotta get back rakin' leaves again, but meanwhile a real Merry Christmas to all '22 grandchildren, their parents and their grandparents.
