Here's a message for those of you who are still undecided about returning to Hanover for our fabulous fortieth reunion. Whether or not you've signed up in advance when you read this it won't be too late for you to plan to pack your duds and hie yourself to Hanover where the welcome sign will be out at the tent in the vicinity of Fayerweather. A recent visit with Charley Moore, our energetic reunion chairman who has left no stone unturned to ensure a highly successful affair, indicated that everything is under control and all signs point to it being something you just can't afford to miss. To ensure smooth operation each event will be under the personal direction of co-chairmen consisting of the following couples: Curt and Marian Abel, kick-off luncheon; Doug and Dot Archibald, class picture; George and Ann Chamberlain, costumes; Pete and Ginie Haffenreffer, special refreshments; Frank and Corinne Kennedy, picnic; Larry and Dot Leavitt, Memorial Service; Bob and Kay McKennan, Class meeting; Ken and Lydia Nugent, dormitory; Ed Pease (no co-chairman), reunion treas- urer; Ed and Susie Roessler, ex-officio major domos; Stan and Betty Smith, Tuesday luncheon; Herb and Emily Talbot, ex-officio major domos; Rad and Velma Tanzer, panel discussion; Frank and Ellie Wallis, Class dinner; Ford and Gertie Whelden, ex-officio major domos; George and Fran Zahm, Class breakfast.
As of the date of these notes (May 3), the total count of advance registrations was 220, with many more sure to come. Two years ago the Class of 1923 had 263 (128 classmates) back. We should be able to beat that! Incidentally, advance registrations indicate large delegations from such far-away spots as California and Florida. Perhaps the longest trek will be taken by Al Perkins from Madeira.
Dot and Larry Leavitt returned to Norwich early in April from a vacation at Harbour Island, Bahamas, where they were joined by their son with his wife and child plus the three children of their daughter. They were preceded at the same place, Pink Sands Lodge, by Ginie and Pete Haffenreffer, whom they met at Nassau while en route home. Before going to the Bahamas they spent a week at Naples, Fla., meeting the Bill Jenkinses in Miami and driving over with them and playing a lot of bridge. We were surprised and happy to note in the "News from the Clubs" in April that RogStephenson had been elected treasurer of the St. Petersburgh group of alumni.
Most of these notes were composed at Lake Travis, 20 miles north of Austin, Texas, following a three-day meeting in Houston where an opportunity was afforded to see a ball game in the new, air-conditioned Astrodome. The Leverone Fieldhouse at Hanover is something of which to be proud; but you should see this new landmark in the Southwest. It's unbelievably fantastic. But it should be. The total cost was $31.6 million!
A last-minute note from Frank Kennedy: "Did you know I am retiring from active duty with Merrill Lynch at the end of this month? I'll be a small non-voting stockholder, still have my old desk here at 48 Wall Street including facilities and expect to keep myself reasonably busy, but at a leisurely pace. I expect to come into the office perhaps once or twice a week. I can assure you I look forward to some more extended visits to Hanover than was possible in the past. Reunion in June will be a good starter!"
Emily and Herb Talbot were unable to attend the class officers' meeting at Hanover early in May. A card posted in London at that time conveyed the following message: "We shall miss the May meeting, but will see you at reunion. Our trip over was very calm on the Queen Mary. It is a great way to relax."
