There is only one word which properly sums up Hartford's '64-'65 activities, and that is "Success," with a capital "S"! The exclamation point was fittingly placed by the Dartmouth Ruggers who avenged so well last year's one point loss, by trouncing the Yale Bulldogs something like 19 to nothing. The weather was exactly as our last article predicted and the perfect 70 degree spring sunshine brought out the best crowd ever. Naturally the gate receipt was also a whopping success story. Those of you who missed the jazz band beforehand, the marvelous spirit of a winning team bolstering an already spirited Dartmouth crowd, and Hartford's Mayor Glynn presenting the beer-filled Hartford Cup (some say it was an imposter) to the Green captain, you missed a glorious day! That was the exclamation point - the close quotes were (will be as of this writing) added by Dean Thad Seymour at our May 26 Annual Meeting.
Success was also the theme of our spring money raiser, Cinerama, and the "Search for Paradise" with Lowell Thomas. A slow start selling tickets dimmed our hopes for awhile, but a last-minute drive by President Dick Page '54 made us a neat little bundle to call our own — or rather, our scholarship's own. And while on that subject, our congratulations to Dick Page for his second and last year as club president, during which he not only kept up the furious pace of interesting activities for the rest of us members, but he nearly doubled our financial intake over his first year.
Now, just to skim around a bit and hand out other plaudits where they're due Rich Fisher '41, our enrollment chairman, has asked that I mention the names of his people who did such a fine job of scouting out prospective freshmen for us this year. These include Tom Morton '54 in Suffield, Eric Vaughan '38 in New Britain; RalphLittwin '32, Morgan "Bud" Spencer '40 in Bloomfield, Dave Payne '5B in Simsbury, Paul Liscord '46 at Loomis and in Windsor, John Hopkinson Jr. '39, Dan Neiditz'54 in Hartford, and Gene Davis '29. The work performed by these men is undoubtedly the most important function of any body such as ours. Well done, gentlemen and this goes also to the many interviewers and workers who pitched in for Dartmouth.
At a recent organizational meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Southeastern Connecticut in Essex, Cal Billings '28 and Ed Perrin'38 and their wives represented our club as only two of our most illustrious members could. Your president and secretary have also traveled quite some bit during the year visiting various other of our counterpart clubs in Connecticut and Massachusetts. It's unfortunate we can not review the entire year's schedule here, but suffice it to say that it has been a highly successful one, of which we are justly proud.
In addition to a noted Vermont humorist this photograph taken at the dinner meetingof the Dartmouth Club of the Province of Quebec includes (l to r) Peter Kirby '54, amember of the Gold Medal winning bobsled team in the '64 Olympics; Edward Hinman'35, President of Canadian International Paper Co.; Professor of HistoryEmeritus Al Foley '2O (from Vermont); David Salter '53 of Textile Sales Ltd.; andGus Hennessey '38, Executive Director of the Federation of Catholic Charities.
