The class of 1923 has good reason to be in a rejoicing mood as it faces its 44th year after graduation. Under Lou Wilcox's leadership and inspiration we finally went over the top in the Alumni Fund. Several new highs were established - a dollar total high of $44,689.32 and a participation high of 97.8%. The regional vice presidents, ably assisted by Karl Klaren and Connie Dodge, made an unbeatable combination: Wah-Hoo-Wah! Lou Wilcox, Connie Dodge, Howard Alcorn, Bill Kimball, Karl Klaren, Jim Broe, Charlie Rivoire, and Larry Eager.
We now look forward to our 45th reunion — one year early - June 12-14. KenQuencer is our chairman and in October he will meet with Roger Wild '21 and Ike Miller '22 to arrange joint events with their classes who were in Hanover with us and will reunion at the same time. Watch this column for announcements of cocktail parties, class lunches, and dinners which Ken will arrange. The main thing is to start planning now on June 12-14. Arrange fishing trips and vacation schedules so you will be in Hanover Monday through Wednesday. 1923 will have one of the most modern dorms - probably on Tuck Drive. Each room has a lavatory.
It is with deep sorrow that I am writing an "In Memoriam" this month for Kan L.Chun. Over the years the Chuns have entertained many 1923 families. When my mother visited the Islands in 1959, Kanky and Mildred went out of their way to be hospitable. Subsequently a box of orchids arrived every year on Mother's birthday until she died.
Jules and Carol Rippel have joined the group of 1923 families who take one or two short trips out of the country each year. Jules ran two businesses prior to 1964- his own and a sizeable philanthropic foundation. In 1963 he made some major decisions and he is now concentrating on the foundation. He is president of the Fannie E. Rippel Foundation and finds the work so deeply challenging and interesting that he has no thoughts of retiring. His hobbies have such a wide range he is at a loss to name a particular one. He is the proud grandfather of three grandchildren.
Win Wadleigh mailed in a copy of the February 28 Barron's. This copy contained an article entitled "Out of the Frying Pan." In this article Phil Weinseimer is quoted as follows: "Shaver volume in 1965 rose 10% says Philip C. Weinseimer, vice president of North American Philips. Cordless shavers, which have made practical the concept of the second shaver, are one of the fastest growing segment of the market, representing 25% of all shavers sold."
Another honor was conferred on CharlieZimmerman recently when he was elected a trustee of Lawrence Academy in Groton, Mass. Charlie contributes generously of his time and energies to many hospitals, institutions of learning, and civic enterprises of national as well as local status.
Ward Hilton retired last January 31, after 42 years with the Hartford Insurance Group. All of this time was spent in the Chicago area. He and Sally will continue to live in Evanston. Their son Dave, wife Sally, and two children live nearby. Daughter Jayne and husband live in Los Angeles.
Vince Baldwin comes through with very interesting news about his son Richard who graduated from Dartmouth this June.
"A Dartmouth College senior from Libertyville has been cited by a professor of Geography for outstanding academic achievement during the winter term. Richard L. Baldwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent C. Baldwin, of 1022 W. Park Street, was commended by Prof. John W. Sommer for his consistently superior work in the philosophy of Geography. Mr. Baldwin crossed disciplinary lines with elan that placed him beyond others who merely excelled. His consistently penetrating discussions and mature scholarly approach aided those about him, thereby increasing the quality of the seminar," stated Sommer.
"In a letter from Thaddeus Seymour, Dean of the College, Baldwin was told that faculty citations are extremely rare, being awarded only when a student's work is sufficiently distinguished to merit special recognition."
Vince adds that when Richard's son David was born at the Mary Hitchcock Hospital, Dean Seymour presented the baby with a certificate admitting him to the Dartmouth tribe.
Recently Vince was presented at a Scouters' Appreciation dinner with the official Trail Blazer Award for distinguished service to American boyhood. Vince is still an active member of an Explorer Post. He took the boys on a canoe trip in Northern Wisconsin in June.
