The war in Viet Nam has been brought closer to us by word from Joe Smith that his son, Fred, was wounded in action near DaNang on April 16. He was admitted to the St. Albans, Long Island, Naval Hospital on April 24 to receive orthopedic care for the serious damage done to his left arm by mortar fragments. He was a member of the Marines' 3rd Engineer Battalion and was promoted to a corporal on the day he was wounded. Fred is our second casualty - Elliott Donnelley's son Dave, also a Marine, was seriously wounded earlier this year.

Ed Flanders has been promoted and appointed Educational Sales Representative for Encyclopaedia Britannica reference materials to schools and libraries in Massachusetts and part of New Hampshire. For 38 years Ed has been with Compton's Encyclopaedia, now owned by his present employer. Ed has another claim to fame as the father of the youngest '28 child, John Edwin, age

For those of you who missed the picture and story in the last issue of this MAGAZINE. you should know that a '28er was elected president of the Dartmouth Alumni Council at its meeting in Hanover June 17. George Davis is chairman of the board of the Glens Falls Insurance Company and a trustee of Skidmore College.

We are all proud of the tremendous job done by our Class Agent, Howie Bush, and his hard working team of assistants, who persuaded you to contribute the tidy sum of $47,539. Congratulations to Rupe Thompson, chairman of the Fund, which this year set new records.

Speaking of Rupe, he received the honorary degrees of Doctor of Commercial Science from Suffolk University in June and Doctor of Science from Bryant College in July. Rupe received his law degree from Suffolk Law School in 1934.

Rem Kinne has been named manager of the casualtv-property department at the Albany, N. Y., office in the Travelers Insurance Company. Rem joined the company in 1935 at the home office in Hartford and the following year moved to Albany. He and Reliance have two children, Remsen III '52, a lawyer in Boston, and Reliance, Wellesley '57, both of whom are married.

Apparently you fellows are preoccupied with grandchildren these days because we had only five candidates for this year's freshman class at Dartmouth. The three who were accepted are: Sam Billings, Richard Kenney, and John MacEachran.

We're obliged to Joe Smith for a few words about the spring reunion at the St. Andrews Golf Club on June 10: "We enjoyed the evening of fellowship and the food was truly excellent. Bill and GertHeep deserve our thanks for their efforts, but the turn-out should have been much better. It was good to see Warren Burding, trim as could be, and meet his wife. EarlFain hadn't been seen in a long while, and he was there. Good old reliable Red Pelton came all the way from Olean, N. Y., and after the party Ruth and I brought him home to spend the night with us. Ken Turner had his daughter, now a sophomore at Hollins College, with him."

Old Outing Clubber Curley Prosser and wife Allene had a great time last summer roughing it on a camping trip to Alaska. They report the scenery the best they've ever seen in this country or Europe.

Irv and Mickey Engelman met Roy Myers in the lobby of the Palace Hotel in Lucerne, and marked the reunion by sending us a card.

High point of the Skinner summer was daughter Catherine's marriage on August 27 to David McDowell, Bowdoin '64, of Glens Falls, N. Y. Among the ushers were our three sons, Scott '64, Douglas '69, and Stephen, Lawrenceville '69. Guests included Herm and Marguerite Schnenel of South Orange, N. J., George and Eleanor Klein of Pittsburgh, Tom Morris '48 and Jim Smith '49. Following their honeymoon in Ireland, Catchy and Dave are living at St. Peters School, Peekskill, N. Y., where Dave teaches.

After two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal, our lad Scott arrived home safely and is now attending Columbia University Law School.

Sam Dennis and Mrs. George Morris Sara were married July 23 in the Unitarian Church, Arlington, Va.

Jean Chapman Leach, widow of HankLeach, and Burton Taylor Hord were married June 18 in the First Presbyterian Church, Joliet, Ill.

Two more classmates have passed on- Chet Goulding on April 23, and Ralph Wiltsey on July 30. In Memoriam notices will appear next month.
