The College has been busy building this summer, although most of the work would escape the eye of the center-of-campus visitor. One piece of construction that wouldn't, however, is the Kiewit Computation Center which gets handsomer by the day. The facility should be ready for its computers and staff later this fall.
A two-story temporary wooden frame structure is being fitted neatly between the two brick wings of Thayer School's Cummings Hall. The $90,000 temporary building will be used for graduate student carrels and study rooms, instrument storage, and shipping and receiving space.
Another temporary structure, one story and of a metal exterior, will be added to the Medical School, north of the back entrance. The building, at a cost of approximately $70,000, will relieve some of the space problems at the school.
Davis Varsity House renovations, inside and out, are also nearing completion. The building was extended toward East Wheelock Street to allow for added offices and a new stairwell to the upstairs offices. The training rooms and locker rooms and upstairs football offices were also renovated.
To provide more housing for young faculty the College has built six more three-bedroom houses in the development west of Lyme Road, just north of the golf course, and five four-bedroom houses east of Lyme Road. Twenty-eight more units for married student housing were added to the Sachem Village development -fourteen buildings providing two-bedroom units and a like number of three-bedroom units.
The College is also remodeling a large, recently acquired dwelling on West Wheelock Street for six apartments for staff assistants.
