It's a good thing that I held back a few of Shep's notes from the last issue. Pickin's of news have been so scarce this month as to be almost non-existent. Maybe the postman is making a terrible mistake, like delivering my mail to the town dump, but this doesn't seem likely. If things keep on like this, I'm going to convert this column into a crib of gossip and rumor.
However, I do have a few good bits. SamTaylor writes that his middle-sized son, James, got married in August to Lorraine Crook of Chicago. George and HelenUglow attended. Sam's oldest boy, Leslie, married Julie Shore of Winston-Salem some time ago, and has a daughter, Jan. Sam's youngest, Allen, is at the U. of Colorado.
Jim Lyall reports his son, James McKay Lyall, entered Dartmouth this fall. AllenMcClean reports his son also is a pea-green this year. Allen remarks about sailing with Ward and Rod Thompson; this must mean sailing in Casco Bay, Me., which is where Trudy and I do our navigating. We must track this down further, for Falmouth, Me., where Allen lives, is just off the east coast of Chebeague Island, where we do our summer sailing.
Forsha Russell is building a nest at Delray Beach, Fla., hoping to spend three months or so down there this fall and winter, playing golf, etc. Says that Si Leach has a similar set-up nearby. I cannot figure out whether these projects are beach cabanas, golf dugouts, or split-level chateaus. Will someone send further details?
Sam Groves writes to Shep "Get that Prudential Plaza all swept up for October 15 when we move in!" If you westerners could only see this new area in Boston, as well as some of the other new areas here, your eyes would pop. This can happen in Boston of all places? Shep also forwarded a clip of an advertisement in the Paris New York Tribune, run by Sam's United-Carr.
Incidentally I really don't know what I would do without Shep Wolff's notes. I hope that he will eventually forgive me for hiding his scotch cooler all summer!
George Gilpatric writes from Chatham, Mass., enclosing a beautiful picture of his Salt Acre Efficiency Apartments, open all year 'round. Wish we could run a commercial on this, but it's against regulations, of course.
Ralph Maynard is busy developing candidates for Dartmouth. Last winter he took two prospects to Hanover to look things over. One was accepted and presumably entered college this fall. Ralph hopes to beat his .500 batting average next year.
Vice-president Fred Tetzlaff of Rome and Haas Company was elected a director of the company this summer; he's been with them since 1941.
You all will be sorry to hear that Margaret Phinney, Bill Phinney's wife, died in a Manchester (N. H.) hospital in September. They have two daughters, Amy and Margaret. The family resides in Goffstown.
George Hetfield is campaigning for mayor of Plainfield, N. J., where a vacancy due to retirement has occurred. Hope to have more news of this later on.
The picture of the Hanover Inn (old part) being demolished to make way for the new Inn causes mixed feelings. No more Coffee Shop, or quaint rickety four-people elevator. Trudy and I stayed in the bridal suite (!) last New Year's Eve - canopied bed, living room, et al. About the only other people in the hotel were a group of howling young girls going to ski-school. We had a marvelous, wet, slushy weekend, and were only slightly shook up when we saw all the autographs on the comforter at the foot of the bed, scores of them!
Now this can never happen again, but it did happen once, and we are rather grateful.
