A most informative letter from Gene Calvelli has much to say both about his own activities and this past summer's Alumni College. The Calvelli clan took the four oldest children to Hanover, leaving two at home, and evidently enjoyed the Alumni College to the fullest - "convivial and stimulating ... excellent way of spending a vacation ... wonderful opportunity to soak up the liberal arts." Other '45s aboard were Ted Smith (in his third year of attendance) and Ed Menefee who is practicing patholoogy in Albert Lea, Minn. Gene, taking advantage of all his spare time in the practice of medicine in Port Washington, N. Y., is now on the local board of education - "I wonder which is my vocation - medicine or school board business." He goes on to say that the only '45 he sees consistently is Bruce Kenworthy, who also hits the news by his own right this month due to his recent appointment as Monsanto Company's manager, carpet market, with responsibility for coordinating all sales, merchandising and technical service of Chemstrand fibers.
Historian Dick Welch of Lafayette College has written a book about a Massachusetts barrister who personified New England Federalist political activities in the 18th and early 19th centuries. "Theodore Sedgwick, Federalist: a Political Portrait" was published last spring. Reviewer S. H. Brockunier called it "an indispensable reappraisal of a decade and more of national political history." Dick is chairman of Lafayette's interdepartmental program in international affairs and had a summer fellowship to work on another book on the political influence of 19 th century Massachusetts Senator George F. Hoar.
Keeping '45 influence felt on all sides of the carpet world, Walt Zebrowski has been appointed plant manager for several of the divisions of Bigelow-Sanford, Inc. at its Thompsonville, Conn., plant. Walt and family live in Enfield, Conn., where he is director of the Enfield Historical Society and a member of the Enfield Senior High School Building Committee.
Jim and Ginny Edson are now based in Acworth, N. H., where Jim is pastor of two mission churches. Since returning to the states in 1964 after two years as associate director of an adult education center for church laity in Saskatchewan, Jim has continued his work in Christian Education in community churches.
Two members of the class executive committee have made the news. Art and Terry Nichols have left Connecticut for the San Francisco area where Art is now vice-president (data processing and programming) of the Fireman's Fund American Insurance Company. The Nicholses are residing in San Rafael. John Osborn adds to the brief announcement of his election to the Alumni Council by writing that he is one of the council members-at-large. John, in the portion of his time that Dartmouth doesn't claim, is in the practice of law in Rochester, N. Y. — "My law affairs are about 50% trial work and 50% general practice involving trusts, estates, real estate, and corporations ... pleasing but challenging volume of work." It is hoped that these two recent changes do not deprive the class of the continued efforts of these two faithful workers.
Dick Murray fills us in on his recent appointment as director of the Bi-National Center in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. For the edification of any '45s in that area, he may be reached at the American consulate in that city. Helen and the children are scheduled to join Dick for his two-year tour of duty.
Another vice-presidential appointment in data processing went to Bob Aldom with the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company. Bob has been assistant treasurer and assistant vice-president during his career with the firm which he joined in 1947.
Dick Harwood is now president of the Torrington, Conn., Chamber of Commerce. Dick, who has been active in the chamber for the past six years, holds the positions of assistant secretary, assistant director of industrial relations and corporation counsel for the Torrington Company. He resides in Torrington with his wife and two children.
Rod Sweeny has been appointed manager of advertising and sales promotion for the IGE Export Division of the General Electric Company. Rod will be responsible for the Division's overseas activities. He has been with GE since 1950 and was most recently manager of advertising and sales promotion for the producer goods export department. Rod is also the newly elected president of the New York chapter of the International Advertising Association for 1966-6.7.
Pete Habeln checks in from Billings, Mont., with enough news to let us know that all seems under control in what he describes as "the arid intermountain area." Pete is "in practice with four other surgeons, one of whom is also an alumnus of Dartmouth. I do the thoracic and cardiovascular surgery for the group... there is a shortage of doctors, so I work too hard. The camping, hunting, fishing, and skiing in this area are great, and even if I didn't need to work, there wouldn't be time to exhaust the possibilities." He and Jeanne have three boys and, like so many of us, speak of having seriously considered attending the Alumni College - from all reports, including that of Gene Calvelli as above, those of us who don't get there are missing a worthwhile educational experience as well as a pleasant Hanover interlude.
Here and there ... John Holdridge has been reassigned in the American Consulate Service, returning to Washington after two years in Hong Kong where he served as chief of the political section, and Chinese language and area officer.... Virginia and Fred Perry's son, W. Scott, II, is a member of the present Dartmouth freshman class. ...Howie Germain is national sales manager, department stores for International Latex Corporation.
