The cold hard winter was made even more severe last Saturday night (Feb. 5) by a fighting Yale hockey team which humbled the Big Green 4-2 before the unbelieving eyes of your correspondent, and several other astonished classmates. One of the more astonishing revelations of the evening was the fact that five of the Yale team came from the Minneapolis area and that three of them were from Wayzata out of Blake School. This led to violent recrimination of one Wayne Carl Linman (commonly known as Buck) who was once the pride of Wayzata and Blake, yet did not deliver one of these stalwarts to the Hanover plain. All we can say, Carl, is that we'll suspend judgment but you'd best deliver another year!
While enjoying the after-game-repast with our leader John Boyle, I got filled in on the recent flight from the rat race of Manhattan made by Mac "Whitey" Dunlop. Jack got a card from him telling the particulars of "Whitey's" move last summer to Denver, Colo. He left his position in the insurance business to take up flying again. He is now pilot-instructor for United Airlines and he said that he and his family have already grown extremely fond of Denver.
If I wasn't late with my columns so often you'd get some news items even later than you do. A case in point is the announcement I got from tonight's paper about MarcelDurot, erstwhile editor of our class newsletter. Marcel has just been named president of Sterilon Corp., a division of the Gillette Company. It wasn't so long ago, you'll recall, that Gillette sent Marcel to France to head up Gillette in that country. I know it may be undiplomatic to ask, Marcel, ol' buddy, but my dispatch didn't tell me what you make or sell at Sterilon so could you let us know?
Always a pleasure to hear from EwingKent Calhoun, even though it is on a rather sensitive anniversary which we both have exactly a week apart. And as though I haven't confused you enough about what's been happening of late to John Brower, Cal informs me that after only two months in his previous job with Ryerson Steel. John has been promoted by them again. Henceforth, as of Jan. 17, John will be General Order and Merchandising Manager of Ryerson's new Minneapolis plant. Cal also couldn't resist mentioning that Dartmouth's new football captain for '66 bears the proud name of Calhoun.
One of our own, Roy T. Abbott Jr. was recently a party to the largest loan the Chase Manhattan Bank ever made. Ray, a vice president of the bank, was the officer responsible for approval of a $97 million loan to Gulf and Western Industries. I have no idea how it feels to hand out money like that, but next time I see Ray I intend to find out.
News of two '52 ministers has come my way the past month. I learned from the Elmer, N. J., Times that Rev. Edwin Sumner gave an inspiring lecture on "peace around the world and fellowship" to the Elmer Rotary Club not too long ago. And from the Cleveland Press, I see that Rev.Walter Grevatt is still toiling in the underdeveloped vineyards of the Lord in Cleveland. Rev. Grevatt, pastor of Hough Avenue United Church of Christ, is also chairman of the board of an organization called HOPE - Housing Our People Economi- cally. In his latter position he is supervising the renovation of a number of apartment houses in a neglected area of the city. These apartments will be used as housing for "low income, aged, or displaced persons."
I was pleased once again to receive my annual year-end letter from Carol and Francis Chisdes. They reported that although they had a bit of bad luck during '65 they were going into '66 with stiff uppers expecting better things and thankful and wiser for having weathered the past year.
From my change of address cards I get a bit of information, from time to time, and this month I see that two of our classmates have, as it appears to me, new positions.
John Knox has a new address - in Dallas, where he is now Market Research Manager of Frito-Lay. And here in New York, HowieCarter is now with the Borden Company. Being a well-known man in the cosmetics business it is no surprise that we find him with the Marcelle Cosmetics division of that fine organization.
And, of course, it's that time of year once again when we'll all be hearing from John Klein. John is very anxious to get a jump on things and beat our fine Alumni Fund performances of the past two years. The regional agent system seems to have worked well, so John wants to keep it going this year. I join him in urging you all to get your contributions in early and prevent the cliff-hanger close-out of the past two years when we didn't know we were over the top 'til the last week was through.
One more very important item just in over the transom. Our progeny continue to multiply. Insurance magnet Harvey Kelley, reports that just last weekend, on February 5, precisely, his wife gave birth to his first son, second child, a six pounder named Bradford Kelley.
I hope this finds you all in fine fettle looking forward to a marvelous spring. I'm certainly looking forward to it. I've had enough of this winter stuff.
