The ski reports received from classmates in Europe this winter have not left me as envious as in the past. We've had our fair share of snowfall and cold this year. However, digging one's car out every morning and trying to turn over a dead battery every so often can be a bit tedious. Mike Corcoran doesn't have any of these problems. He travels about town, Munich, to be exact, in a sled and when "traffic" becomes unbearable, he can escape to the nearby Bavarian Alps. Mike has been in Munich for more than a year working for Continental Oil and its German marketing subsidiary. After obtaining his M.B.A. at the University of Michigan, Mike went to work for Conoco and operated out of their London office prior to Munich. Sharing the sled with Mike are wife Sharon and daughters Erin, 4, and Mary Paige, 2.

Our correspondent in northern Europe, Bill Mansfield reports snow depths there up to his ears. Unless Bill has lost some height while toiling away in the U.S. embassy in Oslo, there must have been lots of good skiing in Norway this winter. Bill has been doing a lot of moonlighting on the slopes. Don't worry, taxpayers! Up in the fjord country the sun shines very little these days.

However, in Ron Jabara country there's sun all day, every day — or so the travel posters say. Ron and brother Robert Jabara '45 plan to build a luxury hotel on the island of Madeira. Ground breaking is set for later this year with completion in December 1967. For the past five years, Ron has been in the family business of importing Madeira hand embroidered table sets. With Ron commuting back and forth between Funchal and New York so often, he'll probably end up seeing less sun than our Norwegian correspondent.

Half way round the world from the idyllic isle of Madeira, some of our classmates are involved with a far less exotic land - Viet Nam. Dick Deaner, as navy surgeon on board the aircraft carrier "Oriskany" leaves Coronado, Calif., shortly for his second tour of duty in the South China Sea from where the air attacks are launched. Dick writes that it is a sad war. As reported in a previous column, Sam Track has been assigned to an army hospital on Okinawa. Now we have some more details. Sam has been stationed on the island for a year now and is chief of the anesthesia department of his very busy hospital. Six months ago, Sam's family joined him and they're now comfortably ensconced in a government housing project, Ryukyuan style. Recently Sam and wife Rhona were able to get away for some R & R in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The welcome mat is out at the Trock household for all '54's passing through Okinawa. Bring your own chopsticks!

Closer to home '54's have been getting involved in governmental activity, too. PeteGutlon has been named by Governor Chafee of Rhode Island to the State Commission on Higher Educational Facilities. This commission assists in the administration of educational laws at the state level and administers funds provided under the federal education program. Pete is a vice-president of Barton Manufacturing Corp. and he and wife Audrey reside in Providence. From Walpole, Mass., comes word that Bob Bassett was appointed administrative assistant to the superintendent of schools there. In this position, he will actively engage in assisting and coordinating the recruitment and hiring of school personnel. Bob will also be responsible for coordinating the flow of information between the school system and the community. Prior to this appointment, he served as a research associate to the Massachusetts Education Commission and as consultant to a national study for improving vocational and occupational education. Bob expects to obtain his Ph.D. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in the spring.

Other Bay Staters are in the news this month. The Mechanics National Bank in Worcester recently announced the promotion of Maurice Wilkins Jr. from trust officer to assistant vice-president. Will, who joined the bank after his hitch in the Marine Corps., is a graduate of the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University and a member of the Worcester County Estate Planning Association, the Worcester Kiwanis Club, and the Young Businessmen's Association. He and wife Zelda live in nearby Holden with their two children. Phil Ctaristophe has been named manager of Simplex Wire & Cable Company's accounting, power and control division. Simplex is a major producer of wire and cable for the electrical industry and has its headquarters in Cambridge, Mass. Phil is a graduate of Tuck School and formerly was treasurer of Emmco Plastics Corp. in Andover, Mass. Pete Gunas has entered the ministry and is now with the Orleans (Mass.) Methodist Church.

At one time or another, this winter's bumper crop of ice and snow must have tempted each of us to play hooky from the office and head for the nearest ski slope or for the quickest plane to the balmy south. However, such diversion was probably less attractive to those of us taking on new responsibilities, such as Mas Itabashi. Mas is an architect and has moved to Washington, D. C., where he joined the firm of Doxiadis Associates, Inc. Another in this category is Peter Roos who now lives in South Norwalk, Conn., and has become a principal in the New York City management consultant organization of Barrington & Co. Inc. The Scott Paper Company announces that it has recently placed Gordy Nichols in charge of new consumer products development in its Consumer Products Division. Gordy, who has been with Scott for ten years, lives in Blackwood, N. J. On the first of the year, Ron Dougherty entered into the formation of a new partnership for the practice of law in Canton, Ohio, under the name of Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths and Dougherty.

Certainly no reporting of increased responsibilities would be complete without mention of Ed and Mary Lou Winnick, the happy parents of Michael Gustav, born on Dec. 24, 1965. For his two older sisters, the arrival of the Winnick heir apparent was even more exciting than the arrival of Santa this Christmas Eve.
