It's that time of the year again - the Alumni Fund Drive is kicking off its campaign with a series of class agent meetings across the country. These pages will be full of news about the current drive but the need to contribute early is apparent. We'll keep you posted on our class' progress. We have a much higher goal than last year; Bill Russell selland his group of assistant class agents will be contacting each of you individually in the coming weeks - please respond.

Received a letter from Stu Mahlin bringing me up-to-date on his travels and travails in local government. There has been a tremendous need for trained professionals in state and local government for a long time and when Stu described the extensive debate over salary, terms, etc. which the City Council of the city in which he works engaged in, I was amazed. I can't understand how local government expects to obtain competent administrators when they are so reluctant to treat these men as professionals. At any rate, Stu has turned down several offers from other outfits and will remain in the Cleveland area for the foreseeable future. Stu passed along word that Carl Wright has been "sprung" from the Army and, along with wife Jane, is back in New York somewhere.

Mick McCamy also checked in with news that he was promoted to first lieutenant in October and remains at Ford Hood, Texas. He anticipates his release this month and then will head back East. Nothing too definite yet but I hope Mick keeps in touch. He heard from Wally Eldridge who's stationed on a destroyer off Viet Nam - hope that some others of you had a chance to see that TV special on the sea war in that area. I think I received a very good idea of what Wally's routine is. Mick also saw a lot of Don Wirtz - before Don went on to Airborne School. Mick thinks Don may be in Viet Nam also by now. And, along with Mick at Fort Hood is a '64 - Dave Osborne, in Intelligence work.

Also heard some news of an old roommate and friend - Gary Silver. From South Fayer, and Pi Lam, Gary went on to Northwestern Med for his fourth year — so he graduates from Med School in June. He'll be interning at Cleveland Clinic - his hometown area. He's not married yet; that probably accounts for his trip up to Hanover in November. I understand he's interested in cardiac surgery - a field that my wife has just done some work in and is tremendously interesting right now. It would be good to hear from Gary - so if Steve Lasser 62 or his wife - Susie - have an opportunity, tell him to check in. (Steve's at Northwestern also.) Chris Wiedenmayer was in the news of his hometown Newark paper - he's been in the Navy, on board a destroyer as a lieutenant j.g. His ship visited the Red Sea area, and Chris got a little leave before reporting back to his ship for the last year of his service. More servicemen in our class - Walt Cornish, just graduated from Officer Training School at Lackland AFB, has been assigned to a New Jersey Air National Guard unit for duty as an information officer — a good place to be and one which I'm sure Walt hopes he remains in. LarryChapman was at Mather AFB completing a navigator-bombardier course and probably is now assigned as a B-52 crew member with those duties in SAC. I understand that Larry was married in January to the former Nicole Cataford of Stamford. Ushers were Don McKinnon and some other former Big Green gridders. I think that Larry and Nicole are at Castle AFB now.

Along the marital trail - two journalists have decided to do their proofreading together. Dave Rosenbaum has gotten engaged to Virginia Kerns - a graduate of DePauw University and a newspaperwoman with the Tampa Times. As I indicated Dave's interest is similarly journalism. Through college, he spent his summers with a paper in Florida in his hometown and graduated with highest honors from Columbia School of Journalism with a master's degree. Dave then went on with several fellowship awards including a Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship. He's a reporter now with the St. Petersburg Times and by the time this column hits the stands, he should be a married man. Geoff Nothnagle has also become engaged - to Helen O'Connor, a Holyoke alumna now working as a chemist for Maine's Department of Health. Geoff is a lieutenant, j.g. on board the "USS Pt. Defiance" serving as disbursing and ship's store officer. I don't know how much longer he has to serve. I've received about half a dozen different clippings from the college about Ford Hutchinson's wedding to the former Patricia Jane Foster. As I mentioned previously, I believe, she's a Hollins College graduate. They should be back in the Philadelphia area by now, but I've lost track of just what Ford is doing to keep the cupboard full.

The newest head agent for the '66 AlumniFund is Laurence S. Duffy Jr. for 1965.
