George Seielstad should be the first man mentioned in this month's column. I think he's lost. I haven't heard from him or about him in several years. The funny thing is he's eligible to collect from me on a bet. Anyway, I have so little news to report that I thought I'd start off this way in hopes that somebody could write and tell me about George (and themselves) so that I could make good on my payoff.
I sit here writing this with the usual mixed feelings of satisfaction and agony that go along with the final stages of class selection. I think we've picked a class that is outstanding in its variety of talents and abilities, but as with anyone who attempts to create something (and I think we create a class rather than merely select it) the refining and final molding process always leaves you with some residue material which in quality is as good as that which is in the finished product. We've had to turn down some awfully good boys but we've done so because those we have taken offer a promise of making just a little bigger difference here on the campus. Of course, much depends upon which of those we accepted finally decide to come to Dartmouth. Thus my thanks to those of you who have recently played a part in helping the accepted boys make up their minds.
I recently had word that Rennie Spaulding was rowing on a four-man crew for the Manila Boat Club. He had to miss the interport races because he moved up to Cebu City in the Philippines. I believe he is working for a bank out that way. Rennie recently had dinner with Opie Jones who is over there with the Peace Corps. Bob Josefsberg wrote announcing three recent changes in his life. After two and a half years as an assistant United States Attorney for Southern Florida he left the Federal Government and went to work as a trial attorney for Nichols, Gaither, Beckham, Colson, Spence and Hicks in Miami. He and his wife have built a lovely home out in Southwest Dade County after three and a half years of renting. I think this was probably prompted by the arrival of Karen (now nine months) who, with brother Kenny, age 2, and sister, age 3, made a few more bedrooms appealing. Bob has also been busy doing some interviewing for us down in Florida. Art andKay Duggan have just welcomed a big lineman into their family. Stephen Michael Duggan was born on March 21 and weighed in at 9 pounds, 9 ounces. Official word arrived of the marriage of Mai Swenson to Susarme Murth on January 29 over in Innsbruck, Austria. A recent article in the Eatontown, N. J., Sentinel announced that Marty Goodall has become associated with the law firm of Doremus, Russel, Fasano and Nicosia in Redbank, N. J. Marty is a trustee of the Dartmouth Club of Monmouth County, a member of the Monmouth Bar Association and of the New Jersey State Bar Association.
On the home front, Dick Regosin, Assistant Professor in the Romance Language Department, is organizing a program for study and travel in southern France. The students will study at Pau and live with a French family. Dick has promised them "running water and a possibility of a shower."
I just had word the other day that PeteBarber married Irene Bass out in Beverly Hills on April 2. Rudy LaRusso was not involved in a play-off game at that point and was able to attend. I gather that no other '59s were present. Mike and Suellen Diamond sent an announcement of the birth of John Allen Diamond on February 12. John joins brother Eric, age 3. Mike is a resident in medicine at the Bronx Municipal Hospital and will be at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City next year for a year of allergy training. Then he plans two years in the Air Force.
And that's all there is this time. I trust that you've all written to the Alumni Fund and enclosed a big fat check rather than writing me. At about the time you are reading this, we will be having Class Officers Weekend up here in Hanover and I'll have something to report on that next time. I guess by now all your golf swings are unrusted, your grass is coming up and your wives have convinced you how badly they need summer outfits for themselves and the kids. Meanwhile you will look at the same old madras jacket for another season.
