Getting this column started again after the long summer layoff is never easy, but I always hope that after I get the first few words out the rest will begin to flow rapidly. The wet summer hasn't dampened the '59 spirit too much. There seems to be a good variety of news - some weddings, some births, and some interesting promotions. So, here we go for another year. Only two more and I can hang up my pen. Maybe I should try a little LSD now and then so the column will really send you!
John Ferries called me the other night about some class business and mentioned that he, John Goodrich, and George Drawftaugh had recently been in the wedding of Bill Lehan to Anne Simonson - actually it was July 29. Bill works for the Mercoid Company as a sales engineer. Anne did her undergraduate work at Vassar and then took an M.A. from Harvard. However, they forgot to teach her not to give a husband golf clubs as a wedding present. She hasn't seen Bill much since. I bumped into Lee Wilson walking along Hanover's Main Street the other day. He was on his way home from Expo and could find no rooms in either Vermont or New Hampshire until he got to the Hanover Inn, surprisingly. Lee is assistant counsel to Governor Hughes of New Jersey. Bill Steck is now associated with Shepley Bulfinch, an architectural firm down in Boston. If the Red Sox keep going the way they have been, he may end up helping to plan a stadium. Dave and Cynthia Marshall have a new son in the family, Breck Turner Marshall. I'll bet he can run faster than the old man already. And while we're on the subject of births, Dave Gavitt's wife Julie recently presented him with another backcourt star. Hugh Gavitt was born back in early August and I imagine he's doing a little dribbling even though it's not on the hardwoods.
American Airlines has awarded Bob Nelsen the silver wings of a flight officer. He has just completed training at the American Flight School in Chicago. Prior to joining American, he served in the Air Force for seven years, from 1959 to 1966, attaining the rank of captain. Bob, Dorothy and their children, Jeff and Eric, now live in Chicago where Bob will be based. It could well be that those of us who visit the mid-West frequently will have a classmate at the controls.
Back in April, John Burkhardt became the new executive assistant to Pennsylvania Highways Secretary Robert Bartlett. He will be responsible for studies involving the integrated planning of various modes of transportation. Mike D'Elia is now a "Maineac." He has been named Assistant Professor of Education at the University of Maine in Orono. He had been at the School of Education at Cornell where he was associate director of the Regents Advisory Committee on education and leadership and assistant to the dean.
You '59 wives who need your traffic tickets fixed, Bill Sherman and several other members of his law firm were recently admitted to practice before the U. S. Supreme Court. Bill works with his dad's firm down in Stamford, Conn.
Good news comes from down in Hartsdale, N. Y. Larry Toal has recently been promoted to the position of second vice president of the Chase Manhattan Bank in the Credit and Loan Standards Department. Now, don't go bothering him if you forget your lunch money. Ray Hymes is probably still noting the changes — he married Carolyn Carr back last April down in Miami, Fla. To us Emmets that sounds like a year 'round honeymoon.
Pete Foltz was awarded a Master's degree by Rutgers University last June, but the announcement does not specify the field. If you live down near Hartford, Conn., and want to buy a Mercedes Benz, try the Willard Motorcar Company. Wally Willard recently started the firm, switching over from the accounting field. It naturally follows that Wally should be active in the Sports Car Club of America. How about raffling off a Mercedes for our tenth reunion, Wally? I'll handle the tickets.
The Spartan ranks are diminishing - Marty Goodall became engaged to Barbara Holcomb of North Dakota this summer. They were married on September 2 and are living in the New York City area. As I mentioned in a column last year, Marty graduated from Georgetown Law School and is now practicing with a firm in Red Bank, N. J. Barbara had been a dietitian on the staff of St. Vincent's Hospital on Staten Island. I hope she can keep Marty in good shape. Also back in June, Bill Maistrellis announced his engagement to Maria Planes of Coral Gables, Fla. Bill is a senior resident at Boston City Hospital. On August 26, Opie Jones married Joan Simon. They now live in Buffalo.
Dick Kulp has joined the staff of WMCA Radio in New York City as a news man. On clear nights that station penetrates the North Country, Dick, so we'll listen for you. As a matter of fact, the more hot air the better. The Kulps and their two sons live in Wantagh, N. Y. Avery Allen received an M.B.A. from Western Reserve University back in June. Those of you who don't dig the hippies should have been with John Cook who conducted an anthropological dig this summer way up in the Yukon area. John is currently at the University of Wisconsin. He had several Dartmouth graduates in his party. Actually, I'll bet he's found much similarity between the hippies and the ancient tribes. It's no surprise that they can grow flowers in their hair.
Fred Lockyear has become an account executive with the Walston Company out in Portland, Ore. The company serves investors through 96 offices coast to coast and overseas. Fred and Mary Ann live in Milwaukee, Ore.
I recently had the pleasure of a nice visit with John Baldwin. Fresh from five months of study in Germany, John was on his way back to Champaign, Ill., where he is now Associate Professor of Chemistry. For a little extracurricular activity he translates German works into English. He has published over forty papers in the last several years - enough to keep most of us busy reading for months. Somehow, he's still in excellent physical condition.
Well, let's hear from you! Wives - I suppose I can always print one of your recipes if there isn't any news. Make it a long one with lots of juicy instructions.
