We got a long letter from Bobbi and JimBell full of news of the '64's out their way in California. The clipping service that occasionally sends us the usually rather banal news that is relayed in this column doesn't seem to stretch as far west as California. Matter of fact, Pennsylvania is about the extent of its range with particularly heavy doses of New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts. Therefore we especially appreciate news from the West Coast. Bobbi and Jim Bell are now living in Stanford Village. Jim has finished his courses and is working full time on his doctoral thesis. Last March he passed the Ph.D. exam in Computer Science, and in June received his Master's degree. His thesis will be on the topic of designing computer languages. Stanford Research Institute has given him a fellowship for this work. During the summer he worked in the same field at Control Data Corporation in Palo Alto. Bobbi is also working at SRI doing research on new rocket fuels. She majored in Chemistry in college. They write that they have spent most of their free time out there traveling, visiting Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and of course Disneyland.

"We periodically see many Dartmouth people. Take Bob and Karil Frohboese '65 whom we see regularly. Karil, by the way, is taking up where she left off at Bridgeport State and has become a straight A student at San Jose State College. Bob will be graduating from Stanford Business School in June. They spent the Christmas skiing at Alfa, Utah.

"Fred Roberts is here too, along with Dave Starrett, both of whom passed their Ph.D. qualifying exams and will therefore be around for a while.

"In August, we saw Margaret and SteveSharfstein who were at a conference at Stamford after a summer in Los Angeles. Both are students at Albert Einstein Medical School in New York City. Steve's Dartmouth roommate, Dave Shipler, recently home from the Navy, married the former Debbie Isaacs, and is now living in New York and working as a reporter for the N. Y. Times.

"In September Dan Garnett came through on his way to San Francisco for interviews with several hospitals for a surgery internship. He, after graduating from Dartmouth Med in '65, is at the Columbia University School of Medicine. Dan told us that PiersStainforth has left Columbia to become a banker in Canada.

"From John Topping we heard that SteveCoit 'is running for state legislature in Norwich, Conn. He has the Republican nomination in a predominately Democratic district but stands an outside chance of pulling an upset. (How did you do, Steve?) Bill Craig, Yale Law '67, is managing Steve's campaign.' John Topping, you should know, has made editorial columns as far west as our own San Francisco Chronicle with his experiences in the summer of '65 which was the background for his recently published book 'Southern Republicanism and the New South.' Co-authors are John Lazarek and William Linder."

We also got a letter from Taylor andPam Washburn. They are living in Palo Alto where Taylor is working on his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. Pam has a job at the Stanford School of Medicine. They mention seeing Bill Neukom who is at the Law School and Jim Wilson also in Electrical Engineering. Both Jim and Taylor received their Master's degrees from the Thayer School last June.

Thank you for the letters. Carnival this year is Feb. 10, 11, and 12; if any of you happen up this way, give me a call 643-3979. If I'm not at home you can talk to one of the other people on my five-party line.
