Seth Strickland and cohorts have kept you well advised of happenings in the Alumni Fund Drive. But since this is just about the midway point in the campaign, I thought I'd add yet another voice to ask for a reasonable gift for Dartmouth. Do remember what Dartmouth was for you, think of its unique status in our society today and consider what you want it to be tomorrow: a leader in every possible field of a man's endeavor; and then give a reasonable gift.
That said, let me add a few rumors. Boband Katie Heineman are plotting to get to Europe this summer for "work" and travel after Bob gets a degree in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Bob and Katie were married in December 1962 after Bob got out of the Navy where he (or more appropriately, I suspect, his ship) had "carried frogmen and chased submarines." There are two little Heinemans: Barbara, 3 and Claire, 1.
A man who stubbornly remains single is Morris Feldman. He's the secretary-treasurer of a distribution center in Chicago served by barges, trucks, railroads, and pipelines. It serves the dry cargo, food products, chemical, and petroleum industries. Less concerned with moving goods, but rather boys' minds, is Dave Chevrier as chaplain to Vermont Academy, a prep school in Saxtons River, Vt. Dave also keeps his hand in by coaching the school's football team and a Pony League baseball team in town. He's been active in recent vigils for peace by clergy and laymen, such as the one in Washington, D. C., on January 31 and February 1. Dave is married to the former Eloise Eberhart.
Chuck Cherry gives as his motto "if a man wears it, I've handled it," as the manager and buyer of a men's furnishings store in Nashville, Tenn. He and wife Linda Ann have two sons: Robert Scott at 5½ and Russell William at 2½. Also concerned with men, but surely from a different point of view, is Gregg Fellows. He is 3 M's administrator of the unemployment compensation department and the military man-power co-ordinator. After that tongue twister he tells me, though, what he really does, viz: he administers all legal action against employees and provides financial, marital, and emotional counseling. Gregg is married since April 2, 1966 (I'm writing this on your anniversary - congratulations!) to Beverly; they live in St. Paul, Minn.
Sandy Ingham has been appointed executive editor of the Sentinel Publishing Company in East Brunswick, New Jersey. He has been editor of The Spokesman newspapers since 1961 and will direct the editorial operations for that newspaper as well as for the affiliated Recorder newspapers and The Sentinel. Last we heard, Sandy is still single and living at 386 Franklin Road, North Brunswick.
Just to balance things, here's more from a bachelor again: Bruce Booth. He's a research assistant in physics at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He expects to get his Ph.D. in June. He will then pitch tents at the Experimental Station of Du Pont Co. in Wilmington, Del. Bruce has been quite active in supportive politics as a board member of the Young Republican Club (Evanston) for the past two years. Yet another academic bachelor is Bill Evans. He's teaching English at Columbia while, I quote, "enjoying the life of a carefree bachelor in New York." He's also trying to finish his Ph.D. dissertation. Somehow the "carefree" doesn't seem to help the "dissertation" along.
Bob and Merle Clark just had their eighth wedding anniversary. Robert Jr., 7 and Ashley, 4 enjoyed the occasion. Bob is a lawyer, legislative counsel for Senator John R. Dunne, executive secretary and counsel for the Mayor's Joint Municipal Survey Committee of Long Island's North Shore Villages, secretary of the Garden City Republican Club, and in addition still gets in a lot of skiing in the winter and tennis in the summer. Another lawyer, Mike Heitner, just got married on March 25 to the former Susan Lee Scribner. Congratulations! Mike is with Lowenstein, Pitcher, Hotchkiss and Parr, a downtown New York City law firm; he does corporate work, specializing in SEC matters.
Bob Cary is a partner in the firm of Russell S. Cary & Co., Melrose, Mass., Certified Public Accountants. He and wife Jean have one daughter, Heather, 3. I'd like to add a few comments to last month's column on Bob Boye: He and Nancy have by this time three young ones, Kris 5½, Winkie 3½ and, at the moment of this writing, one unknown, as Bob said, "8½ months under construction." Bob also enjoys interior decoration and landscaping.
The Class was honored recently when Pete Herrick received the National Security Agency's Exceptional Civilian Service Award. In a statement the NSA said: "... this award is bestowed on an extremely limited and select few, and its presentation is predicated only on exceptionally substantial and truly outstanding accomplishments. In Mr. Herrick's case, it was presented in recognition of his many and significant achievements while performing special and extensive research and analysis of singular and major importance. Citing his superlative technical cognizance, the citation further invited recognition to Mr. Herrick's exceptional management and administrative abilities, and addressed particular attention to his initiative, resourcefulness, ingenuity, and creativity which consistently characterized his performance in promoting and improving multiple Agency objectives." Congratulations, Pete!
John Turner reports that he has completed his Th.M. degree at Union Theological Seminary and is now working on a Ph.D. degree in religion at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Bob Reid just recently returned from 12½ months duty with the Marine Corps in Vietnam and will spend some time in San Diego, Calif, before returning to Chicago to finish his residency in Internal Medicine. Frank Loeb is still in Vietnam as a surgeon in the Marine Corps at Da Nang. Wife Marjorie expects him back this spring to finish his military service with a one-year practice at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital before doing his residency.
Mel Converse was recently elected Assistant Cashier of the First & Merchants National Bank in Newport News, Va. He and Molly invite all passing '60s to stop by. Dick Guilford is leaving the USAF after three years as a Captain to go into law practice with McLean, Seaman & Laing in Lansing, Mich. Blackie Bruner reported that he's in his third year of ophthalmology residency at the Washington, D. C., Hospital Center and that he remains single and is enjoying it.
Dave Bond with wife and new son Peter will be moving to Vancouver, British Columbia, this summer from Ontario. Dave will teach in the Department of Economics at the University of British Columbia. Another man on the move - but much more frequently — is Rog Stephenson, as the Assistant to the Sales Promotion Manager at Fuller Brush Co. in East Hartford, Conn. He's on the road constantly and ranges from Illinois to Kentucky to Massachusetts.
