Beneath the hot summer skies the winds of change have been blowing through the class ranks. Dr. Len Mead resigned his post at Tufts University as vice president and provost to accept an appointment by the Ford Foundation as advisor to the University of New Delhi in India. Len has retained his status at Tufts as professor of psychology and is on a twoyear leave of absence for his duties in India. Specifically, Len is to aid in making the University of New Delhi a model for contemporary education in that country where there are now 55 universities and over 700 colleges. Len's daughter, Susan, is a freshman at the University of Rochester this year. His sons, Philip and Leonard Jr., are in graduate work at Tufts and banking with the First National of Boston respectively.
. The Insurance world recently noted the advancement of two executives. Paul Guibord was elected agency vice president of Security Mutual Life of New York. His previous duties were as general agent for Mutual Benefit Life in charge of their Newark offices. Out in Minnesota John C. Parish, head of multi-cover underwriting was elevated to vice president by the St. Paul Cos., Inc. Both John and Paul have worked in insurance since their graduation in 1936.
There was quite a bit of summer news out of New Hampshire. Bob and Dorcas Chaffee of Lyme announced the marriage of their daughter, Jennifer, to Dr. Michael A. Pears. The wedding took place in Richmond, Va., where Dr. Pears is an associate professor of medicine and Mrs. Pears is a senior medical student at the Medical College of Virginia. Ben and Beryl Moyer of Sugar Hill, N. H., were the parents of the bridegroom when their son, Peter, married Elizabeth Burns of Brunswick, Me., in the chapel of Bowdoin College. The bride is a graduate of Smith College and will teach in the New York City school system in Harlem. Peter attended St. Paul's School, Concord, graduated from Harvard University and is in his third year at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. Down in Keene President Dave Putnam of Markem Machines Co. announced a change in corporate name to Markem Corporation. Markem manufactures systems for in-plant application of information, identification and decoration of products, packages and labels.
Dick and Janet Knight's daughter, Julie, had a June wedding in Winchester, Mass. The bridegroom was John Trocchio Jr., of East Meadow, L. I. The couple are making their home in Columbia, S. C. Julie is a 1967 graduate of the Georgetown University School of Nursing and John is a 1967 graduate of the Georgetown University College of Arts and Sciences.
On August 3 the Class of '36 held its first annual lobster picnic at the home of Tommyand Laura Thomas on Birch Point, East Bath, Me. Arrangements were handled by Tommy, Pete Fitzherbert, Brad Chase, and Bill Niss. Dick Dorrance was on hand to chronicle the festivities with pen and camera, and a full account will appear in TITHE. There were 23 present and it is hoped to make this an annual summer get-together in this beautiful spot on the Maine Coast. Anyone who spends their summer vacations in that area should let one of the committee members know so they will be informed of the time of the '69 picnic.
Pete and Barbara Fitzherbert attended the Alumni College in Hanover and have high praises for it. Our Class had the largest number of graduates in attendance. In addition to the Fitzherberts there was Dickand Dot Allen, Art and Francesca Davidson,Dr. Wilson and Ann Ferguson, Norb andPic Hofman and Jim and Mavis Pollock. All the '36 attendees were entertained by Phil and Leslie McInnis at cocktails and were joined by Bern and Jean Woods, BobChaffee, Mrs. Davis Jackson, and Mrs. HerbHiggins.
Although all sporting attention is now focused on the Olympics in Mexico, Bern Woods took the last winter term off from his French and German teaching at the Woodstock Country School to officiate at the Winter Olympics. You will be interested in this note from Bern. "I was the only American Nordic official and was very busy measuring at the three jumping events at Autrans (70 m. hill) and Saint Nizier (90 m. hill) as well as at all daily practices. Jean went along and after Grenoble we spent ten days in Nice, a week with friends in Karlsruhe, West Germany, and a final week with Ernie Zwicks in Oslo including the Vikersund Ski Flying and Holmenkollen meets. A great experience for us both."
Budd Schulberg hoped to turn over the manuscript of his new novel, "Sanctuary V" to the publishers this summer. Budd spent the spring months in Lake Como, Italy, putting the finishing touches on it.
In May Bob Fernald of Green Village, N. J., was named to the newly created post of director of long-range planning for the National Lead Co. He previously held the position of director of marketing research. Bob Button is Director of Policy Planning for COMSAT in Washington. He was recently made chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Hamilton Bank and Trust Co. of Bailey's Crossroads, Va. Tom Coughlin, Judge of Probate of Stratford, Conn., has formed a new law partnership with Dr. Irwin J. Gordon of Trumbull. In Northboro, Mass., Attorney Stan Walker has been appointed town counsel. Stan is a former town counsel for Barre, Oakham, and Petersham, Mass. He maintains his law office in Barre. Ted Levin, son of Art and Betty Levin, of Scarsdale, N. Y., graduated from Dartmouth in June and has started his pre-medical training at Yale University. The Levins' daughter, Leslie, is a freshman at Goucher this fall. Pete Fitzherbert's daughter, Nancy, has completed her medical technology course in Houston, Texas, and is with the family in Auburn, Me., for a few weeks' vacation prior to assuming a position at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, the N. D. Anderson Hospital.
It has been a great summer on Lake Winnipesaukee according to Brint and DorisSchorer. Brint gave Dick Morton a lift to the P.O. by boat on one occasion. They all got together with Des and Betty Stewart one evening. Although Paul and Lee Cleaveland have, a house on Lock's Island on the lake, they never could find them at home. Like all resort areas, property values of the Winnipesaukee shorefront are skyrocketing.
The Princeton game in Hanover on October 12 will be well attended by '36. There will be an informal reunion at Dexters' Lodge, Sunapee, N. H., under the watchful eye of innkeepers, Chuck and Lois Aaron. The annual Yale post-game get-together on November 2 is also planned for the Tobacco Valley Inn, Windsor, Conn., hosted by Geneand Kate Tamburi. The food is superb and the company great! If you are in the vicinity for either event, please join the group.
