With the start of another publication year, the Class of '63 has gotten off to an auspicious start. Congratulations are in order to Bill Russell (and wife Patty) along with the other regional agents and assistant class agents who made this year's Alumni Fund Drive the best yet for the class. We achieved new heights in both percentage participating and in the amount given. We came in first in our Green Derby category and just did a tremendous all around job in the fund drive. Since I last wrote the executive committee has met to start reunion plans and has gathered names of those interested in helping out with the reunion coming up in June. Bill Subin and Art Williams have pushed plans along with the assistance of Bob Finney (the father of a son born on May 27, Robert Johnson 3rd). The Class Newsletter as well as this column will keep you informed of developments.
At a ceremony in Washington, D. C., Dave Halsted has been sworn in as an officer in the Foreign Service of the Department of State. He received this appointment after successfully completing highly competitive written and oral examinations. We are waiting to hear where he and his wife June will first be assigned. Surely it couldn't be any place more remote than Asmara, Ethiopia, where Dave was stationed during part of his tour of duty as a naval officer.
Dave Pentico several months ago wrote that he and his wife Barbara were parents of a girl born in February, Christine Jane. Dave is in Pittsburgh at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate Business School working toward his doctorate. Vic Poleshuck and Joyce are also parents but I do not have word of gender. Knowing Vic it is probably a boy. Now he and his family are in Athens, Greece where Vic is with the Air Force at a base in that city. From Billings, Mont., Brent Cromley and Dorothea write that he is enjoying his clerkship with the District Court there. Brent and his wife were married in September 1967 while he was in law school at the University of Montana. After graduation, Brent joined the Peace Corps and taught English and Math in India for two years before entering law school. They expect a baby in February.
I have learned the address of Steve Anderson, at least as of a few months ago: 1390 Taylor Street, San Francisco, Calif. 94108. Steve is an attorney and admitted to practice in both Oklahoma and California. He is still among the unmarried '63's. Also checking in over this summer was KevinLowther, who was married in June, 1967 to Patricia Mitchell of Aiken, S. C. Kevin is still working for the Peace Corps; his wife is a former Peace Corps volunteer in Turkey, who was working as a Community Education Specialist in Washington, D. C. Kevin has been operations officer in the east and southern African division of the Corps and returned recently from a six weeks' survey of Peace Corps programs in two southern African countries, Botswana and Lesotho. Jon Bates, single and 2S, is approaching his doctorate in Sociology at the new School for Social Research in New York. Buddy Bruggeman and Ann are presently in California where Buddy is interning in medicine at Harbor General Hospital. In June he will be returning to New York City where he will do a residency in radiology (my wife's speciality) at Presbyterian-Columbia Hospital.
Although it may seem implausible, there are still some recently married and unmarried members of our class. For example, Bruce Birch and the former Frances Diane Hill were married on May 4 in Richmond, Va. Bruce recently completed his internship in Burlington, Vt., and is pursuing his residency at another hospital now. Pete Funke plans a fall wedding to Caryl Ann Brutte in New Jersey. Pete received his master's degree from Wharton School here in Philadelphia, and is now, I believe, working in New York. By the time this MAGAJZIKE hits the newsstand, Ed Mazer and Charlene Davis should be married and settled in their home in Springfield, Mass. Ed is president of the Standard Paper and Merchandise Company in that city. Charlene is attending the American International College there. Joan Ellen Slatkin and Sam Barton where married in June in Rye, N. Y. I believe that Sam is teaching now, but I don't know where. If he is within hearing distance I wish that he or his bride would let us know their plans. Joe Ruwitch and Sammy Ann Zwanzig became engaged in May as Joe was finishing his first year residency at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx. Joe graduated from Washington University Medical School; Sammy Ann is a graduate of San Jose State College. Steve Kurland found time during his surgical residency at Mount Sinai Hospital, in New York to marry Carol Ann Lochan of New York City. Carol has a master's degree in speech pathology. Steve has several years to go in his residency. Another August wedding was Donny McKendry and Judy Derk. She holds a M.A.T. degree from Brown; after college Donny received a master's from Rhode Island College.
