Couple of items we had no room for last month re our summer activities. Last June we Bankarts attended the graduation of our youngest son, Bill, from the University of Maine in Orono. He immediately signed up for Navy Air Corps, passed the exams and at this writing awaits word as to when they want him. The ceremony at Maine was held in the football stadium involving an enormous number of people including, of course, a procession of faculty. Knowing that one Professor of Biology Al Whitehall could be among them we scouted around as they lined up and sure enough, looking no different through "lo these many" we spotted him. We regret the meeting was brief with no time for late news flashes but refer you to his scientific accomplishments as reported in our 25-year book. He's quite a guy.
And as usual for Bostonians we got to Cape Cod for a weekend or two. We were guests for dinner at the very old and luxurious Hotel Belmont where we were surprised to run into Milton Marsh in their brand new gift shop. Seems the hotel and he made a deal last winter to open a branch of his well known Port-O-Call shop in Harwichport so he puts in unenviable hours seeing to both places. His Dartmouth sophomore son is studying in France this year, an exchange student endeavor new since our day.
Apropos of the coming 200th anniversary of the College with its multitudinous planning we can be justly proud of an entry in the Congressional Record dated 21 June 1968. Senator Tom McIntyre rose to introduce Bill S-3671 to have "appropriate and artistic" medals struck in commemoration of this event by the U.S. Mint. It was received and referred to the Committee on Banking scription of the College before his austere constituents was enough to promote gold medals, but that's another Washington problem and we'll no doubt settle for. less.
Speaking of political doings we had a card from Bob Barry last June. He is president of Calicopia Corporation engaged in land development on the Salton Sea with a mining and timber tract in the Sierra. Their address is 155 Wildwood Way, Woodside, Calif, (near San Mateo). Says Bob "I ran for Congress in the primary losing by a hair, 33,000 to 30,000. Daughter Cynthia graduates from Claremont College and my son Rogers is at Whittier College. We still have our Washington, D. C., house where we will be in July prior to the Republican convention in Miami."
Our drinking buddy and fellow correspondent meets acclaim and we quote the news release. "Roger G. Allen of Hempstead has been appointed Public Relations Director of Personal Affairs Institute and two of its professional members, DeLisser & Associates of Freeport and John Newman Associates of 32 Cliff Street, NYC. PAI is an educational and service organization engaged in encouraging business executives and average working people to make an annual check of their personal affairs, with particular emphasis on provisions for financial security for themselves, their families, and their businesses." Congratulations, Mr. Allen.
Another news release from COSERV (National Council for Community Services to International Visitors) HQ in Meridian House, Washington, D. C. "Robert A. Aylward, chief of community relations in the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has been named executive director of COSERV." This work is wholly concerned with services for visitors from abroad. Many of us have been privileged to follow Bob and Meg's colorful 21 years of foreign service, mostly in the Far East, through the medium of their annual newsletter, some of which have been reproduced in the Mint Bag from time to time. Of their children it would appear that Anne continues at Radcliffe, David at Dartmouth, and Michael at Junior High in Washington.
That doggone McKinlay is loose in the news again, he's harder to keep up with than Roadrunner. Colorado's Governor, John Love, appointed Don to a four-year term as one of a seven-man commission on higher education. Their responsibility is to coordinate education among the state-supported colleges and universities. Looks like Dartmouth is well represented as another member is Harald Pabst '38, former mayor of Aspen and a local rancher.
Readers of Time Magazine may have noted a quote in the 16 August issue under Education by Phil Robertson. He was a trustee of Franconia (New Hampshire) College, "an experimental college that ran away with itself" says Phil. The original idea and need for the establishment of new colleges was admirable but Franconia is an example of what happens when students and faculty have complete say in running their own affairs, too much permissiveness leading to chaos.
Art Guyer has been assigned education officer at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Me. He has served this position with the Airforce and Army since 1949 in various world locations like Germany, Morocco, and England. Prior to his present job he supervised ten schools and eight language laboratories in southwest France.
Dave Todd, who runs his own architectural firm in New York, is one of eight to be named a fellow in the AIA. He was a former VP of the NY chapter and currently a member of their committee on school and college architecture. He is also a member of the Housing and Urban Development Committee of the Community Service Society and of local Planning Board No. 8,. city of New York.
Tom O'Brien (T.G.), principal of Bedford Park Academy, NYC, was given a reception last June honoring his 25 years of service in that position. He joined the Academy faculty in 1939 as an English teacher when it was known as the Drake School.
Reporter pro-tem, Bill Falion, sent word there was a cocktail party at Dave Camerer's place in New Canaan, Conn., last summer for the local Dartmouth club. Some 50/75 couples attended but no other '37s. Also he sent a clipping from the NYTimes re the wedding of Frank and Kay Danzig's daughter, Victoria, to Keith Henry Smith on 7 September in Beverly Hills, Calif.
We have received an announcement of the marriage of Dr. Mike Wright to Mrs. Nancy Goodwin Dewing on 8 June last. And the Wall Street Journal took note of Bos Bosworth's elevation to chairman and chief executive of Will Ross from president and chief operating officer.
