FEBRUARY 1968 PAUL R. MAHONEY, JAY B. JOHNSTON

Before I start blasting all the latest dope at you, I want to thank those of you who have taken the time and consideration to fill out our questionnaire and returned it to me. This information will be of immense help to Hank and me as we try to keep tabs on the mad, mad world of '65. Thanks from Hank, from Crosby Hall, and from me.

The Christmas mailbag brought greetings from '65's all over, but none more meaningful than a prayer for peace and good will from the Blackhawks (2nd squadron, 1st Cavalry Division) in Viet Nam, signed by Marsls Wallach. Marsh will return to the States in July for his discharge.

Before he leaves the Central Highlands he may run into Pete Baumbusch, who is an Army second lieutenant, and who is on his way to Viet Nam in the Army's Pacification program.

They're not alone over there. Hugh McGee, an ensign in the Navy, is somewhere nearby aboard the "U.S.S. Conquest," completing a nine-month Pacific cruise.

Also in Viet Nam in a civilian capacity is Bob Wildau, who is with the French news agency, "Agence France-Presse," in Saigon. Bob had been with the same organization in Paris for a year, but he quit last June, and spent what sounds like an amazing ten weeks driving, flying, bussing, and training in the general direction of Saigon.

At the softer end of the stick, Duker Tompkins is serving out his first lieutenantship in the Army in the Panama Canal Zone. Actually Doug is in Special Forces which are responsible for training and educating the military personnel of various South and Central American countries to protect themselves and their countries. Duke's rather proud of the way some of "their boys" handled Mr. Gueverra in Bolivia a while back.

Dave Beavon writes from Knoxville, Iowa, that his wife, Kathleen, presented him with a brunette, blue-eyed daughter, Elaine Kathleen, shortly after Thanksgiving. Dave is a science teacher at the Twin Cedars Community School in Bussey, Iowa.

First lieutenant John Van Gorder is enrolled in the Air Force Institute of Technology Education with Industry Program. While in the program John will undergo nearly a year's training at the Sylvama Electronics plant in Needham. After his discharge he is looking forward to business school.

Jerry Putnam and Miss Jane Berger have had their engagement announced. Jerry is a third year med student at Tufts, and Jane graduated just recently from American University.

Jim Roche and Miss Marilyn Conner have also become engaged. Marilyn is a Penn State alumna. Jim is at UPenn Med School.

Ren Carlisle writes that he and his wife, Margaret Ann (Mt. Holyoke '66), are living in Painesville, Ohio, where he is a management trainee with Carlisle-Allen Co., a retail department store. He's also with the Army National Guard.

Bill Webster and his Mrs., the former Victoria Drewes (Hofstra), have settled down in Stamford, Conn, They were married in October. Bill is with the Riegel Paper Co. in NYC, while he pursues his MBA by night at NYU.

Jim Broselow also tied the knot last fall, to Miss Mildred Taylor (Montclair College '69) Bros will also graduate in 1969 from the New Jersey College of Medicine.

Linda and I had dinner with Eric Knox at Bo and Joan Andersen's recently. Eric was east with one of his University of Minnesota Med professors on some obscure mission. He took the opportunity to scout the internship possibilities in the Boston area. Eric tells me that Jim Cooper, one of his med school colleagues in Minneapolis, is also interested in coming east to intern, has his eves on Mary Hitchcock.

Bob Blumenshine thinks he's found a home with TWA. He's a flight engineer-pilot with them and was very enthusiastic in his letter about the whole operation. He, Syd, and their daughters, Sheri and Angela, are now living in South Elgin, Ill.

When Don Miller returned his questionnaire he also passed on the word on some of his fellow AD's. Don is a Lt.(j.g.) in the Navy working with submarines at New London, Conn. He says that Charley Dolben will return to the East as soon as he finishes Navy Nuclear Power School on the West Coast. Phil Cagnoni is teaching at Colgate while he finishes up his doctoral thesis.

Stan Brown is back in the States after a two-year Peace Corps stint in Iran. Stan is now at Penn studying for his M.A. in English, and as soon as that scrap of parchment is secured he'll transfer to the Annenberg School of Communications at Penn.

Paul Eldridge is also at Penn as a Huebner Fellow, studying applied economics and insurance. His M.A. arrives in May, and a doctorate follows in '69 if all proceeds on schedule. Then Paul hopes to be teaching insurance at the college level.

Bob Given, an MBA from UMass securely in tow, is a financial management trainee with Raytheon in Lowell, Mass.

Though he's studying in the shadow of O. J. Simpson, Dave Jones is making quite a name for himself at U.S.C. Dave earned his MBA last June and was president of the Graduate Business students for the year '66- 67. Now he's vice-pres. of the first year law students at S.C. All this and wedded bliss too — he was hog-tied by "Neil" Morris (Lake Erie) in September 1966.

When we reune in 1969 Dave Weber is in line for the "Ivy Leaguer of the Decade" award. Dave is now studying on his third ivy campus. So far the tally reads: Dartmouth — AB, Columbia — MA (with high honors in English), and now Cornell, where he anticipates that a doctorate in English and American Lit will be his in 1970. See if you can avoid Haaarvard, huh Dave!

At the time of this writing I'm trying to fish myself to Carnival, but I'm wondering how many 10 A.M. hockey games a guy can reasonably expect himself to handle in a lifetime. But I'm gradually giving in to myself, so perhaps we will have seen some of you other weak-willed individuals by the time this is published. At least I hope you'll all have several sympathy drinks wherever you are the weekend of February 9-11.

So long!
