Reunion time will be here before we know it. "Bill" Towler is anxiously waiting for those who have not yet signed up. He reports 75 acceptances to date. Joe Barnett lives on Eagles Nest Drive in Bellaire, Fla. I asked him if he was taking good care of the eagles this winter. He came back with this: "Never let it be said, The eagles are dead, They fly far and high, They'll search you bye and bye-"
It's nice to hear from men of other classes. Sometime ago I heard from my old friend Sam Sheldon '14 wishing me good luck on the secretary job. He said: "Of course I always read the 1913 class news with considerable interest. I skim through from 1910 to 1914. I suppose it is tough (it is, I've found out) on the guys who try to get items to include in their notes, but in my case practically all the ones I knew back in 'them' days are now dead. The current- 1913 news seemed most interesting for some reason." Sam is living alone now in Red Wing, Minn.; his wife having died in September of last year. Nice to hear from you, Sam. Another '14er wishing me good luck was "Win" Webber, a member of the tennis team while in college. He is still playing tennis at 75 and can even hold his own with the younger Players.
Jessie Kilbourn, Rev. Albert Kilbourn's widow, reports that last summer she and her 12-year-old grandson David and a friend of his went to Detroit, Niagara, Toronto, Expo '67 and Townsend, Mass. (Albert's home town). They then had two weeks at Dartmouth Alumni College which she said was a most stimulating experience. Those attending ranged from "grads" of 3 to 5 years to Roger Brown 'OS. The lectures were very stimulating and the seminars of twelve led by a faculty member were also excellent. "Reading 17 paperbacks before we went prepared us a bit for the discussions. The boys had classes in woodworking and metal, but most of all, they lived with the computer."
Jessie Macdonald Scott, sister of JackMacdonald, sent a check in Jack's memory. She and Leon always wanted his name on the list. She may get to Hanover in June for Jack Jr.'s graduation from medical school.
Bart and Renza Shepard visited Hanover the first week of February and saw some of the early sports of the Winter Carnival. The new part of the Inn is now complete and Bart says it's a big improvement over the old.
With regret we learn of the death of "Mose" Ewing's widow in January, 1968. James Raymond Malony died at Dick's House, Hanover, Feb. 20, 1968. Ray had been ill for some time. More sad news: a letter just received from Charlie Hopkins '22 states that Conrad (Husky) Wilbur died at his home in Ajijo, Jalisco, Mexico, Feb. 23, 1968. Husky had been confined to his home for the last three months and death was due to cancer. Obits, for both Malony and Wilbur will appear in this or a following issue.
To those of you who like historical novels "The Far East" by Clyde and Beers. A scholarly treatise on the events in the 19th century that prepared the way for Pearl Harbor and the "Commie" conquest of China.
Joe Barnetfs newsletters have been widely acclaimed and as near as I can judge, everybody is looking forward to the next one. I received an interesting note from Ed Stiles from way out in Penticton, B. C. Ed was one of the organizers of the original Red Mountain Ski Club and of the chair lift where Nancy Greene, the Olympic star, learned to ski as soon as she could walk and has skied there ever since with time out to win championships here and there all over the world. A mining engineer of Ed's office designed the original chair lift which is still in use. At 77 he is still an avid skier though more cautious and slows down around the corners.
"Chick" Hopkins '22, who is a neighbor of the Wilburs in Mexico, tells me that Mrs. Wilbur will have to pass the reunion this year. He attended his 45th last June and then went on to spend several days with his 'ol friend Chuck Riley on the Cape. The Rileys spent several winters very close to them on Bellaire Beach, Fla., where they lived before going to Mexico. They also lived near Joe Baraett, the old eagle watcher. So long for now.
