Wednesday, March 20 dawned bright and clear so Lillian and Stan Weld took off for Washington, D. C., for Lillian's first visit to that busy center of our Nation. While there several attempts were made to reach HalMosier but all to no avail. Two days of touring were quite enough to take in most of the sights, including the White House, Capitol and Mount Vernon. LBJ wasn't available for a handshake, but there was a glimpse to be had of both the Senate and the House in session. The cherry trees were showing color but no blossoms. From there it was a good dav's drive to friends in Florence, S. C., where camellias, azaleas, and magnolia, pear and peach trees were in bloom. On the journey back north it would have been a pleasure to drop in on several classmates but time didn't permit. Maybe next time.
Congratulations to Gertrude and Eddie Lutwieler who celebrated their Golden Anniversary on February 16. As Eddie said, the kids did all the planning" and on hand were over 100 relatives and friends from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and even two from Milwaukee, Wis.
Leona and Ned Richmond had a scheduled trip to Tucson, Ariz., by plane the middle of March to get warmed up a bit and see the desert flowers which are indeed a beautiful sight in the spring. Ned has been duly exorcised over the foul publicity Seton Hall has been getting in the Philadelphia press. One of the sports writers is the same chap who couldn't say anything good about Bob Blackman.
From Charlie Fisher to the Secretary: "I don't blame your grandson for going to Ann Arbor for I did the same thing. When you write (him) tell him he's a student in one of the finest universities in the country, and I'll back him up in his choice." Even with all that, Charlie says he will always be interested in Dartmouth where he spent two good years. Charlie was formerly a deacon in the First Church in Newton Centre but now he and Florence have joined the Union Church in Waban where they are living.
With a gay birthday party at the Countway Library on March 7, including a fine dinner for about 75 embellished with good wishes and a champagne toast, Henry Viets passed his 78th milestone. We're all doing or have done it, some in a much quieter way from necessity, but all with chin up looking to that magic 100 set for us by that man Geiser. How you doing?
Somewhere along the line we missed the fact that Harry Barnett was eligible for membership in Lyme's Guild of Pipe Organ Pumpers for Harry used to pump away behind the scenes in the Congregational Church in Newbury, Vt. Then at St. Johnsbury Academy he earned all of fifty cents a week pumping the organ in the church there. Sorry to report he ducked out during the sermon as his dorm was close by but, give him credit, he was always on hand for the closing hymn. Harry is still active in Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, and during the past ten years has visited over 100 different chapters as well as many more visits to the ten chapters in Michigan. The Barnetts made Hanover for our 55th and now Harry says "I am raring to start tomorrow for anywhere!" Why not Hanover again this June for our 56th?
Harry Barnett's letter reminded your Secretary that we both have a good friend in Lin-Yi Ho, Dartmouth '11, living in Bedford, Mass., with his daughter and husband, the Wangs. Lillian and I drove up there the other day and received a most cordial welcome from him and daughter Julia. They are moving to California in June as Mr. Wang is leaving Avco to become associated with Douglas Aircraft. Lin has a son in Communist China from whom he has had no word for two years.
Hal Freund writes that he spent his 77th birthday in Nassau, the first time in 17 years that he has been outside of these United States. He says there is an even chance that he will be in Hanover for our 56th.
Don't forget that reservation card telling Roy Lewis you will be on hand in June for our 56th. Roy is back home in Lebanon now and needs your support. It's later than you think.
Giving the northern March winds a miss was this gathering in Sarasota, Fla. (l to r)Harvey McClary '13, George Boggs '14, Joe Barnett '13, Helen Boggs, Marie Barnett, Laurette Jones, Kathleen Pishon ('13), Cy Jones '13, Lois Towler, and VirginiaMcClary. Bill Towler '13 was also present, but busy pushing the shutter.
