Just listened to the Yale-Dartmouth game on the radio and as usual it was a thriller. The Indians really played superb football as the score 42-21 indicates. It was a fine team effort. They could go all the way.
Mrs. Ellison C. Grayson of San Francisco has been visiting her parents, Bill and Bernice Mason of Winchester, Mass. The last thing Jean's little boy said before leaving for home was "Mom, find out the name of the Dartmouth Indian for me."
Mrs. Jeannette Ricketts Lenfesty, wife of Nathaniel Lenfesty, died at the Valley Hospital, Ridgewood, N. J. She was 75. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Lenfesty came to Summit, N. J., shortly after her marriage in 1919. In 1968 she moved to Ridgewood. She leaves two sons, William of Riverside, Conn., and John of Chappaqua, N. Y.; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Kanouse of Summit. N. J., and Mrs. Janet Gadebusch of New Canaan, Conn.; a sister, Mrs. Sandford Steele of Sarasota, Fla., and ten grandchildren.
Edmund A. Freeman died Thursday, Oct. 9, at Gifford Memorial Hospital in Randolph, Vt., after a period of failing health. He fell and fractured his hip some time ago but complications set in and he failed to recover. "Buck," as he was called by his friends while in college, was a member of the Classical Club, Wheelock Club and received the Junior Latin Prize. It was very appropriate that his roommate while in college, the Rev. Ben Andrew, conducted the services. ... Said Ben of his roommate: "We appreciate his sensitivity to the needs of others and his loyalty in service to family, community, college, and the widening world. His love of books enabled him to render a significant life service as teacher and librarian at Hinckley, Me., and Washington, D. C." Present as pallbearers were classmates Fred Page, Harry French, and RobertConant all of Hanover.
"Bart" Shepard called to inform me of the death of Louise Nelson, Jack Nelson's wife, Oct. 30. She had been ailing for a long time and it must have been a relief, not only to Louise but to her son John and daughters, Mrs. Wies and Mrs. Esteys. Renza and Bart attended the services as the representatives of the Class. Louise was born in Little Compton, R. I., and resided in Manchester, N. H., most of her life. She was a member of the Brookside Congregational Church, Molly Stark Chapter of D.A.R., Mayflower Society and Colonial Dames. Many '13ers will cherish fond memories of Louise, always affable, cheerful and a loyal Dartmouth wife.
Now for some more cheerful news. Ruthand Nelson Gay invited the following to a luncheon at their beautiful home in Hancock, N. H. Present were Elmer Tucker of Holyoke, Mass., Harold McAllister, Bartand Renza Shepard, Ben and Marion Andrew, Marc and Frances Wright. It was an unusually pleasant reunion. The Gays proved wonderful hosts. An enjoyable time was had by all. The fall colors were at their height and the view of the surrounding hills was superb.
Marc and Frances Wright suddenly remembered that come Saturday, Oct. 25, they were to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. And celebrate it they did. Sitting with Mose Linscott, Bill Towler, Billand Berniee Mason, their daughter Ellen and husband over from New York, they saw the Indians from Hanover give the Harvards a lesson in offensive and defensive football. Score 24 to 10. The momentous occasion wound up at Anthony's Pier 4, Boston, with an anniversary dinner given by daughter Ellen and son-in-law.
Thanks to Bob Conant, he gives me news of classmates from near and far. George Davidson has sold the "Flower Ranch" and become a "city" feller in West Palm Beach, Fla. He hated to give up the ranch after so many years but it proved too much to keep up. "Davie" became an octogenarian 5 March, '69 and is doing very well. JayRunkle is going to Pompano Beach again this winter. He had a rough year with a lot of dental work and a hernia to contend with, which resulted in an operation. Recuperation has been slow, but he expects to be playing golf again soon. Les Ashton sent Bob Conant a health food plan so he can live to be at least 100, and see Dartmouth go co-ed. Harve McClary said that Bill Towler dropped in for an over-night stay last month. A quiet (?) evening but they stayed up a little too late.
Congratulations to our class president on his 78th birthday. Bart was given a surprise party at his home in Derry, N. H. Quite a few of his classmates were there, to wish him happy birthday.
