It's always a pleasure to set. to writing this monthly column, but especially so when I do it during the week following the Dartmouth-Harvard game. All roads seem to converge on Harvard Stadium whenever the Big Green is in Beantown, and there were so many '65's present there this fall that I'm sure to leave someone out as I recount the weekend's events.
You can tell we're getting older, our seats at football games keep getting further and further from the goal line. True, we're only at the 15-yard line now, but hang on, we'll be between the 40's before you know it.
Mike Buckley received the Precarious Presence award at the game. You'll recall that earlier this fall I reported that Buck and Mary were expecting their first child on Oct. 25 - the day of the Harvard game. But early in October the doctor adjusted his prediction to the 27th, so Mike felt safe - well, reasonably safe - about tripping to Cambridge. However, he did keep the phone pretty well tied up during time outs, the half, after the game, etc.
The post game festivities in Briggs Cage were heavily attended by '65 dignitaries. Wah Walsh, no℅w a Harvard grad student, was there thumping the tub for a group paddle down the Colorado River which he is trying to organize for next summer. Harvard Law School's delegate on the Dartmouth side was Harris Saxon, with wife Suzie and 8/9 of a new baby in tow. Ed Taber represented Harvard Business School's first year class, and Tucky Mays and another of his ladies were aboard from the Columbia 'B' School. Several classmates brought new brides to the contest:
Pete and Geneese Baumbusch hustled over from the Harvard Law School for the afternoon. We watched Pete wage a battle royal with an usher when he discovered a colonnade pillar parked in his seat.
Mike Quadland and wife, Dorothy, also were in attendance. They were married in early September and now live on Marlborough Street in Boston. He is in health planning and research at the Harvard University Center for Community Health and Medical Care, having received an M.A. in public health from Yale before spending two years with the U.S. Public Health Service in D. C.
Also on tap were Sven and Laura Karlen. She is a Mt. Holyoke grad ('67) with an M.A. in art education from Teachers College, Columbia. Sven is with Smith, Barney & Co. in NYC.
So many other '6s's were around and about the game and the cage that it would be impossible to include all their names here. Suffice it to say that as our group becomes more settled, greater numbers of our classmates are making these ball games fall rituals. This being the case we shall, hopefully, be having an informal class get-together next year either in Hanover for the Princeton game or at Harvard or the Yale Bowl - so plan ahead.
Belated congratulations to Pete and Marcia Frederick on the birth of Jennifer Lynn on August 31.
Many '65's are threatening to tie the knot soon; some mentioned below will already have taken the plunge by the time the December ALUMNI MAG goes to press:
Greg Hannah and Miss Margaret Ann Brown (Smith) were aiming for a late November date. He is assistant to the vice president of the Western Hemisphere division of Chesebrough-Ponds in NYC, and she is a media buyer with J. Walter Thompson.
November was also to have been the month for Rick Leach and Miss Pamara Jan Perry, a graduate of the School of American Ballet and currently a member of the City Center Joffrey Ballet. Rick attends the Univ. of Rochester Med. School.
Bob Shertz has promised himself to Miss Linda Baird, a Briarcliff grad now studying at the University of Colorado.
Others have already joined the ranks of the fat and happy during the past few months.
Dave Venables, a teacher in Marshfield, Mass., married Miss Elvira Pellittieri (Hunter College) in late August. She is teaching in Duxbury, Mass.
John Fenniman and Miss Susan Landers also took their vows in late summer. They are living in Madison, Wise., and both doing graduate work at the state university there. John is a geography student and Susan is studying social work.
Rick Finnerty and Miss Wendy Colten are now man and wife. Rick is a recent recipient of an MBA from Harvard and is with the Dean Witter Co. Inc. in NYC. Wendy has her degree from the Univ. of North Carolina.
Our Dartmouth Project Asia Fellow, MelAng, and Miss Wende Lan-Wan Tsang were wed in August, and are now living in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Dr. Myron Falchuk and Miss Joan Muros (Salve Regina College) chose October 4 for their ceremony. Home for them now is Rockville, Md., where he is doing his residency.
Two of our more learned and opportunistic brethren have snared teaching jobs at rather desirable locations. Greg Fahlund is an instructor in political science at Vassar after a stint as a teaching fellow at Smith. John Rapoport is teaching economics at Mount Holyoke. Now those of you bachelors who are still road tripping will have places to stay.
Larry Duffy has recently been discharged from the Navy, and he and Merry are marking time on the West Coast until their return to the East around Christmas. In February Duff will begin a Master's program in public administration at Syracuse University.
Good health and peace!
