This Home on a Hill in Hingham, Mass., is under the auspices of the Quaker faith, and controlled by their "meeting" in Cambridge, Mass. The Quaker faith seems to be ideally free from dogmatism, unless you insist that it is being dogmatic to insist that you are not dogmatic. At any rate I have never before become intimately associated with any religious group whose chief and continuing dogma is simply and chiefly Jesus' first and second commandments.
Changes have been occurring here because of the recent sudden death of the longtime, dedicated director, Miss Katherine Haviland, and a year or two ago of her sister, Miss Edna Haviland. Other leaders during the period of change have been Winifred ("Wini") Rawlins, a successful poet, now in a similar directorship near Philadelphia, and Ruth Arnold, a trained therapist from far-off New Zealand. Finally there have arrived the new permanent directors, Wade and Carmel Mackie.
At some convenient time later I may tell you individually something about my companions here. During the holiday season I have enjoyed visits with May's and my three sons and their families in the Boston area. The most noteworthy item of news is the birth of their first child, Janet Lee, to Mardi and Bud, daughter and son-in-law of son Bill and his wife Janet.
Next month we'll have a more adequate batch of news. The most important item of course will be the recommendations of our voluntary Reunion Committee. At present it is sufficient to say they are making plans for making this 70th Reunion of Ninety-Nine simple but different and tremendously worth while.
Just remember how much it will mean to us all, if you make up your mind to be one of those present.
