Laurence M. Symmes died February 17 suddenly at the home of his daughter: Mrs. John R. Barnard. The following message was received by your editor from Miss Helen Bennett, secretary to Larry Symmes, "Dear Mr. Ruggles: Just received word that Mr. Symmes passed away this morning suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John R. Barnard, #1 El Capitan, Mill Valley, Calif." .
The first note of Larry's illness was a letter from Miss Bennett, dated June 25 1968. "I am very sorry to have to tell you that Mr. Symmes suffered a coronary early Monday morning (June 24) and is now at the White Plains Hospital in White Plains, N. Y. The latest report I have is that he had a comfortable night but will have to be in the hospital for several weeks."
Larry made sufficient recovery to return to his office during the fall and as we reported in December he and Dorothy took a cruise on the "Gripsholm." Typical of his continued interest and devotion to the College and Class was his offer to take over the duties of Class Agent when ArthurLewis died during the summer.
After learning of the sad news of Larry's death I got in touch with Arthur Barnes. He as Class Treasurer is now the only other class officer besides myself. We agreed we should reorganize the class executive committee according to the set-up established in 1968 by the College. Ted and I decided that Arthur Soule should perform the duties as chairman and Lauris Treadway as vice-chairman; Ted Barnes to continue as treasurer and I as class news editor. Ted is going to send me a list of possible classmates to fill the other class officer positions. As soon as it is ready I will pass it along to the chairman and vice chairman for action.
A complete obituary of Larry will be published in this or a subsequent issue of the MAGAZINE.
George Hinckley who entered with 1908 but graduated with 1909 enjoys hearing about the boys who lived with him in "Hellgate" and others. He entered with $20, with help from Prexy Tucker and "Chuck Emerson," worked his way all through college. "It was tough but I appreciated my education and Dartmouth. I expect to retire this year from the practice of law in Portland, Me."
