One of the amusing things about writing this column is that by the time the thing gets published it is either old hat or kind of like walking out of a drama midway into the third act. Since the article is written at least 30 days in advance of publication date, and since news is at least 60 days late in reaching me one never knows the outcome of certain events. For example an article forwarded to me by the College news-clipping service concerned Richard T. Leary who, according to the December 16, 1968 issue of the Medford, Mass., Mercury, "expected to be appointed executive secretary of the Town of Brookline ... at a meeting of that town's selectmen." We have no doubt that Dick's expectations came true, since his qualifications as aide to three former Medford city managers and most recently assistant to the present Brookline executive secretary for nine years, aptly suit him to the task. But did he or didn't he? Dick holds a master's degree in public administration from Boston University.
Dean Witter & Company, Inc., has announced the election of Bob Woodberry as a vice president of the firm. He is currently manager of their Denver office. He joined Dean Witter in 1966 after being associated with another securities investment firm in the Denver area for seven years. Active in many civic associations, be is treasurer of the Urban League of Colorado, president and member of the board of directors of the Friends of the Denver Public Library, and chairman of special gifts for the Denver Chapter of the American Red Cross. His at-home interests include wife Marlinda and their three children.
In the old hat category are the following clips which really bear mentioning before they turn yellow at the edges. From BarryH. Levin comes the word that he is now a partner in the Boston law firm of Sigel, Gold, Mahoney & Levin, while at the same time serving as president of Sterile Products, Inc., manufacturers of sterile disposable items. As if that weren't exotic enough, he also is a director of Synerjistics, Inc, a company engaged in the manufacture of peripheral computer mechanisms. The mix of these two product lines gives one wide lautude for humorous speculation. John P.Dabney last summer undertook a new post as medical social worker at the Pacific Heights Home Health Center, Inc. in Sail Francisco. Meanwhile Robert W. Higbee also changed positions moving from Armstrong to Alberto-Culver as eastern regional manager of a newly formed grocery products division. Bob complains that the traveling is rather extensive, but he finds being in on the ground floor extremely rewarding. Stephen M. Mullins, also reported a little belatedly on our part, tells of having left the stock brokerage business - something I thought nobody did these days. However, Steve believes there is another game in town in the form of real estate development, particularly renovation and redevelopment and urban renewal. As executive vice president of Pacific Midland Resources, Inc., an embryonic company," Steve has already begun work on twenty projects in the first six months of operation. The need is there, as any city-dweller can tell you, and I'm sure Steve's firm will not lack for opportunity.
Just so you don't think all our news is stale, a few months ago we wrote about the superb work of then major, now Lt. Colonel, Donald K. Brief, as chief of general surgery at the evacuation hospital in Long Binh, Vietnam. Don wrote recently and enclosed this photo of himself and three other Dartmouth men who represent 25% of the hospital's medical staff. Don's tour is up the end of April when he will be reassigned to Ft. Monmouth until his discharge in September. He writes "there is no more deserving patient than our G.I.s doing the dirty work out there." And that has to be the understatement of the year.
This month marks the beginning of the Alumni Fund Drive. Head Agent Dave Metz has planned intensively for making our part in it successful. We trust you will all lend your support and enable us to top last year's result. Give early. Give often. But give.
