We closed last month's column with mention of a letter from Lew Johnstone a portion of this letter follows: "Was in New York a couple of weeks ago attending Paper Week and saw or talked to a number of 41's. Larry Norton was there from St. Paul, to which he recently moved from Richmond, Va. He was vice president of Albemarle Paper Company in Richmond, which was recently acquired by Hoerner Waldorf and is now vice president-sales for the latter.
"Also in New York was Don Knight and his always lovely wife, Sarah. Don is executive vice president of Bulkley Dunton Company with headquarters in New York. They are one of the largest and oldest pulp selling organizations in the world. Even though headquarters are in New York, Sarah and Don still continue to live in Kalamazoo.
"Don Stillman stopped in for a drink late one afternoon and we had a good visit for perhaps an hour. He and Pat, alons with two other couples, were leaving in a day or so for the Caribbean where the six of them had hired a yacht to go cruising in those waters for about ten days. Don is president of Caron Perfume in the U. S. and is doing some traveling in this connection. He was in Paris and London in January for about a week and he and Pat are headed for Hawaii this spring.
"One of the major luncheons at the Paper Convention was addressed by LieutenantGeneral John Meyer. John was there as a representative of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and gave an excellent talk which was well received by the overflow audience in the Grand Ballroom at the Waldorf. John was accompanied to New York by his charming wife, Mary, and later that evening had an opportunity to visit with them briefly at a party which we both attended.
"Stopped in to see Bruce Friedlich, but missed him by about 10 minutes as it developed later when I talked to him by phone. He was about ready to dash for the airport, which I suspect is part of his weekly routine - says he is coming to Cincinnati soon. I hope so, but I've heard that story before, and I might add that Don Stillman is also long overdue on his visit.
"On the Cincinnati scene, we are getting ready for the Dartmouth Glee Club Concert on March 24. Among others, GrantHesser and I have been doing some work on the patron/sponsor part of the program. And on the more athletic side of things, Carolyn and I have been playing paddle tennis with Mary and Sandy Courter in the evenings after dinner. Now if I could only combine this with pushing away from the table. I might even get some weight off, of which I'm sure the good doctor would approve.
"Knox and Tee are still in Hanover, where he is finishing up his senior year and Tee is teaching the 6th grade in the public school system. Knox is involved with the Outward Bound program, which. I do not know too much about, but it involves going into the woods along the Canadian Border or in the College Grant, etc., with a few matches, etc., and staying for several days surviving the rigors of the cold and snow. He and several others are now working with a group of high school youngsters, teaching them some of the tricks of survival under these conditions. Our son Stan enlisted in the Navy last spring and he is on the cruiser 'USS Boston,' which is currently stationed at the Boston Navy Yard and which is scheduled to go to the Viet Nam area some time this spring. On the home front, Carolyn is fine. Missy is working her way through her sophomore year at College Preparatory school- and doing fine!"
