Twenty years ago this month the Class of 1953 had been formed, although not gathered. The tenor of the times was far different; for one thing, being seventeen was regarded as a near-disabling disease rather than an advanced state of comprehensive wisdom. While humility was probably not one of our virtues, we had no conception of what, if anything, we might bring to the College; instead we viewed our coming educational experience much as the empty cup views the fountain. For this somewhat passive attitude, we were branded the silent generation. Now, twenty years later and - looking around, we could be pardoned for feeling a little smug. Dartmouth was good to us and good for us. Of all the graduating high school seniors two decades ago we were truly among the most fortunate.
Dick Goodman has been appointed superintendent of schools of Wellesley, Mass. Dick is now executive secretary of the New England School Development COuncil, and will assume his new position on AW 1, 1969. After Dartmouth, Dick master's degree at Wesleyan and a doctorate at Harvard; he then served as superintend ent of a five-town school district in New Hampshire and on the New Hampshire boar of education. Dick, his wife, and their three pupils live in Wayland, Mass.
Hutch Hutchison has taken another steup at Fidelity Union Trust Company in Newark, N. J. A loan officer at the bank's main office on Broac Street, he has been elected a vice president of the company He has been with the bank since graduation except for two yean in the Army. He was elected assistant treasurer in 1960 and became a second vice president in 1961. Active in civic and professional organizations, he is a Republican county committeeman, first vice president of the New York chapter of Robert Morris Associates, and a member of the National Association of Bant Credit Officers.
Dave Stanley, vice president of personnel for Union Mutual Life Insurance Co., headquartered in Portland, Me., has been elected to its board of directors. Dave joined Union Mutual as director of personnel in 1960 and was elected second vice president in 1966. After Dartmouth, Dave served two : years as a Marine lieutenant. Dave is a director of Child & Family Services in Portland and a fellow of the Life Office Management Association.
Larry Garvin has been appointed vice president of marketing for the polymers and chemicals division of W. R. Grace & Co. with headquarters in Cambridge, Mass. Formerly marketing manager, he had previously held a variety of sales and merchandising positions for organic chemicals and container sealing products. Larry joined a Grace subsidiary in 1962, after stints with Procter & Gamble and U.S. Rubber Co. Larry lives in Wakefield, Mass.; he and Eleanor have three daughters (Maryann. Sheila, and Andrea) and one son (John Laurence). J. L. has got a deal.
You can't read "Variety" and other reliable sources of Hollywood info without gaining the distinct impression that Herb Solow is the town's salvation. Herb is in charge of all MGM's TV productions ana the fall schedule will bear the Solow imprint on all three networks. Having previously revamped Desilu, Herb's similar achievements at MGM are being heralded to the extent that the mere mention of his name "rattles the glasses at cocktail parties, according to an L. A. reporter. Back here in the effete East, that kind of homage is unknown, but it sure sounds impressive.
Bob Nessen left Dewey, Ballantine's York law firm, several years ago to form his own Boston firm, Nessen & Csaplar.
