Writing a column in late April for publication early in June is slightly remindful of a quote this scribe received recently: "I reached the end of April before I reached the end of my list of things to do in April." Which is more or less typical of these days and times!
Sid Crawford says Doris warned him, when he started sharpening his lawn mower, to keep his eyes open for dandelions so she could plan on making wine. Sid says all's well in their bailiwick, which includes the children and grandchildren.
A note from Art Sterling reads: "Just back from another spring trailer jaunt to Florida where we saw several pre-season exhibition baseball games - the results of which in no way produced a basis for prophesying the ultimate outcome of the upcoming season. Abnormally cold weather, with occasional snow flurries, eventually warmed up to nice early summer temperatures. On the way home, more cold rainy stuff, but we made it without undue difficulty." Art has produced another birthday card series connected with the Dartmouth scene and the result is a departure from cut-and-dried offerings. What would we do without his artistry!
Eben Clough reports a late March get-together with Dale Barker for lunch at the Harvard Downtown Club and a short visit later with Chan and Dot Foster, at both of which he was brought up-to-date on class doings. In typical Eben fashion, he tells how to put Turf Builder in a spreader and wheel it around like crazy on the lawn, whereas in the old days "it came from a four-legged hoss and you spread it around with a wheel barrow and a pitchfork." Eben reports a visit to Hanover where a medical checkup might produce new glasses - so he can see the dancers better on television. An enclosed picture showed their home in Ipswich almost obliterated by the winter snows.
A phone from Carl Gish says he was waiting impatiently for his wife Helen to return from a couple weeks' visit on the Coast. He reports that Harry Ellms was coming East for the June Reunion in Hanover. It's a long time since we've seen Harry around these parts.
Another phone from Bob Griffin says he and Helen were looking forward to a get- together with this scribe and wife — when a propitious time allows. We second that motion!
Some facetious wag sends this wisecrack: "The trouble with bucket seats is that we don't all have the same bucket."
An April note from George Ingalls, out in Boulder, Colo., reports a recent California jaunt, nice summer weather and all, only to look out at the mountains white with snow almost down to Boulder level. George is planning to be in Hanover in June and hopes to see this scribe after 54 years. George and the writer are twins birthwise!
A note from "Tony" Simoneau, down at Isle of Palms, comments favorably on the lack of student riots in Hanover and hopes peace will continue up there - to which we say "Amen"! It is interesting to note that at this writing (late April) the only "sit in" at Hanover had little if anything to do with racial discord. May the better judgement of all concerned prevail! "Sim" says they had a rough winter down there but finally got in his first swim at Easter, and "the world looks brighter." What a break - swimming at Easter time!
A recent notice of an Association dinner here in _ New York says: "Sorry about the price hike - inflation, you know." In the same bulletin appeared a request for two men to replace a retiree (age 80). Inflation? Or Deflation?
Helen Rose says she's planning to go to Hanover in June and relates she had her biggest thrill when she became a great- grandmother on March 15 - a bouncing baby boy!
A letter from Jack Ferguson took a bit of de-ciphering, explainable by this insert: "I am typing with my left hand taped to my left-hand fore-finger since I sprained my left wrist. I hope you will have a fine time at the next gathering at Hanover, without bending your elbow to a serious extent." I wonder what he meant by that last crack!
Don't forget the Alumni Fund. 1915 has been a leader in contributing and now is the time to help maintain our standing in this important respect.
So - with this issue, we wind up this column for the summer ahead with the sincere hope that all goes well towards the fall season coming up. "Keep the cool!"
