OCTOBER 1970 ROGER M. BURY, HARRY B. CUMMINGS

Late in July Howie Mullin had a good letter from Rog Bury from Muiden, Netherlands saying that he had just completed the conversion of “Passagemaker” “to nothing but a motor boat, masts now on deck, height 3.4 meters and hopefully ready for 400 miles and 58 locks from Amsterdam to Paris. We are supposed to be there in ten days but am afraid this is a little ambitious. However will not be at the mercy of the weather as we were for the last three weeks, being held in Helgoland for three days followed by a tough headwind passage in the North Sea to Delfzil, Holland. . . . Curt ’53, our son, and his family arrived yesterday so now we have crew to work all of the locks ahead. It would be nice to have some summer too. Ken and Ruth Murray are to join us in Paris August 16 for French canals to Lyon, then our Norwegian friend, Yngvar Hvistenddahl, and his Cleveland wife will be with us to the Mediterranean. Can hardly appreciate it has been two months since we set sail in NY ...”

Then early in August your newsletter ed. had a postcard from Chartres: “Down here for the weekend with new crew member who is an authority on Chartres and its history. Arrived in Paris on schedule after a rigorous 10-day run from Amsterdam with many, many barges. Have 155 locks ahead of us from Paris to Mediterranean. Leave Paris 8/16—arrive Med.?—home?? Food, wine, scenery, and boat-handling demand- ing.”

Kenneth H. Thomas ’2l, Secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Central Florida, wrote Rog a very thoughtful letter that was forwarded to your substitute scribe. “You may or may not know that Bud Wessel-mann of your class is president of the above Alumni Club. We are most fortunate to have a man of Bud’s personality and ability living in this area, and as president he has brought new life and ideas into our Club activities. . . .

Bud is one of the most loyal Dartmouth men I have ever met and his enthusiasm is very contagious. Bud and his charming wife. Dot, have become very close friends of Mrs. Thomas and myself. Bud keeps busy with various projects and among others he has been elected president of the local Anglers Club. We have been fortunate at times to be the recipients of the results of Bud’s catch of snook and other delicious fish. ...”

On June 29, 1970 Lyman C. Whittaker ’42, Administrator of the Anne Arundel General Hospital of Annapolis, wrote Doc Milliken, “It is my real pleasure to inform you that your resignation from the medical staff has been unanimously rejected. . . . Instead, action was taken by the Medical Board, the Medical Staff, the Joint Confer- ence Committee and the Board of Managers to appoint you to the Honorary Medical Staff. . . . This appointment has the added distinction of being bestowed upon only a very small number, namely, one, Lyman F. Milliken, D.D.S.”

The “Anne Arundel Times” followed up this event with a story and an interview headed, “Lyman F. Milliken: Well known in the Annapolis medical profession for nearly forty years, he has just assumed the top volunteer position in one of the most important volunteer organizations in the county.” Doc has been elected president of the Anne Arundel County unit of the American Cancer Society, a group with which he has worked for the past three years. His major concerns in this activity are citizen education and research, but, well knowing that neither can be carried out without financial resources, he has also devoted much time and effort to the annual Cancer Fund Drive.

Since July 1, Marty and Louise Heifer have been living in “the old family home, built in the 1860's, in Marcellus, N. Y.” Marty is, however, in Albany through the week as Executive Secretary of the Confer- ence of Large City Boards of Education (New York, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, and Yonkers).

Among the replies coming back to Rog as a result of the Class birthday card this year was one from Curt Wright with the message, “If I am in France ait time of Princeton game reunion, just ask new class member John Wolf MD if perchance he knows one O. O. (Buck) Freeman, Yale ’29. Freeman, whom I know through a conserva- tion society, says Wolf has snatched many a good man away from Yale.” Curt is general counsel for the Pennsylvania Environmental Council: EPIC. He added a note saying, “Son Hugh, crewing on 38-foot trimaran Honolulu race started from L. A. 7/4 but lost mast 600 miles out and just made it back with jury rig. ..."

Other returns from birthday card are being tabulated; more on the subject later. Bill North
