Class President Bill Bullen, to the concern of Dartmouth alumni generally and '22 especially, was hospitalized in mid- September. At this date, October 1, he is still in Phillips House, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. The post coronary prognosis is favorable and Bill's host of friends wish him complete and rapid convalescence upon his return to The Boylston, 780 Boylston St., Boston, Mass. 02199.

Dr. Gaylord W. Anderson, Mayo Professor and Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, retired last June. His Dartmouth classmates now proudly join countless others in acclaiming his distinguished career. A symposium, entitled "Health—A Mandate from the People," presented by doctors and professors from country-wide institutions featured his retirement. Herbert H. Humphrey gave the opening address and Walter F. Mondale, U. S. Senator from Minnesota, gave the post-luncheon address. Gaylord's friends and colleagues presented the University with $6,000 to establish a Bio-Medical Book Fund in his name. Former students and staff members had previously presented his portrait to the University.

His career included 41 years of dedication to public health. He was with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for eight years, including six as Deputy State Commissioner of Public Health. In the past 33 years at the University of Minnesota he has taught and directed the professional training of thousands of students from the U. S. and 88 foreign countries.

Over the years, The World Health Organization, The Pan-American Health Organization, the Department of State, and other professional interests have prompted his travels to 26 foreign countries. His book on Communicable Disease Control, now in its 4th edition, has been translated into French, Spanish and Portuguese.

He has been highly honored by the U. S. Army, the Peruvian government, the American Public Health Association, the Conference of Public Health Veterinarians, and the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce. He has been granted Honory Life Fellowship in the Royal Society of Health, the Canadian Public Health Association, and the American Public Health Association, which he served as president. He was likewise president of the American Epidemiological Society and the Association of Schools of Public Health.

Gay lord and Viola (Dennis) were married October 26, 1929. Their daughter Gail (Mrs. Harvey Safeer) and two granddaughters live in Springfield, Va. And now all classmates hope Andy and Viola, as the loyal Dartmouth couple they are, will certainly travel back to Hanover for a warm welcome in 1972. Meanwhile and for all the future may they themselves fully enjoy the health and happiness they so earnestly sought for humanity.

Every Twoter instinctively follows Dartmouth's football fortunes. And thanks to Bob Blackman, the Ivy League's premier coach, our joy far surpasses rare chagrin. In addition, classmates will miss something favorable this autumn if they don't look at cross country results. Competent and energetic Track Coach Ken Weinbel has a gutsy squad who may equal or even surpass the 1969 record of 6-1. They recall our own cross country lads of yesterday: Art Coakley, team captain in 1920; Van Shem, captain in 1921; and other classmates such as Tom Carpenter, Frank Dow, Joe Perkins, Ced Porter, Les Sherburne, Hal Tayntor, and manager Jack Dodd. They, too, crossed many a hill and dale for Dartmouth.

Carroll and Nan Dwight had an eventful summer. Their eighth grandchild and fifth grandson, Charles Worthington Dwight, gave his first Indian yell on August 3. His parents are Peter H. '54 and Patricia C. Dwight. The '22 Dwights with grandchildren Eric and Martha Bens, ages 16 and 14, together with Ike and Harriott Miller represented the Class at Alumni College. Spenny and Marge Smith were Dwight visitors during part of the session. And during July, Boston newspapers announced that London Harness Co. was opening two additional stores in Home Village, Falmouth, Cape Cod, and at the "Old Custom House," Wiscasset, Me. Other branches of the main London Harness store at 60 Franklin St., Boston, are at Chestnut Hill, Harvard Square, Braintree, and Kennebunkport, Me. With continued expansion, can't help wondering if our Class Treasurer would consider accepting payments of '22 Class Dues at all London Harness Stores. And how about installment arrangements for presently payable dues?

Henry O. Holland, our Ozzy, passed away in mid-September. This sad news came in from Herm Oliver. A detailed report will appear In Memoriam this issue or next.

Ten Twoters, Warren and Mary Daniell, Ike and Harriott Miller, Stan and Catherine Miner, Oscar and Bea Rice, Len and Margaret Morrissey enjoyed the Dartmouth Club of the Hanover Area picnic in the Bema preceding the opening scrimmage vs. University of Vermont. Dick Litchfield and Russ Putney were also at the game. A grand day overhead, under foot, and on the scoreboard (46-6).

Let's hope that scoreboard doesn't change all season.
