There is joy and there is sadness each month as I write your notes. The joy of hearing from old friends, sharing old memories and the sadness of hearing your ailments and health limitations.

Hermon Farwell's steady hand and thoughtfulness brings news of Robert andMary Cushman. "Robert is one of five who reached the 90 mark in 1969." Mary broke her hip as a result of a fall in the back hall. "Robert does not go out alone. He reads the Boston Herald, his Dartmouth Magazine, and follows all Dartmouth games. He sends his usual contribution to the Fund as I do to Radcliffe. We wish we could do more. He also re-reads his favorite books. We hope to be back to our home in Beverly in April." (Robert is with an older daughter in Brockton and Mary is in Mattapoisett.)

Mrs. Philip P. Thompson writes: "Dear Charles, A letter from Mrs. Wallace Gale, a daughter of Arba Irwin, tells me of the death last Saturday, January 24, in Evanston, Ill., of Marian Irwin, a very precious friend of Phil's and mine. We all remember how much she and Arba contributed to our reunions, and how much happiness their years brought them. Thank you for your thoughtful Christmas message."

As for your secretary I have entered hospitals and nursing homes nine times since April. I am currently in Alice Peck Day Convalescent Home in nearby Lebanon. When I am on good behavior I am allowed to go home for a day. I am appreciative of what medical science has done and of the devotion of the many people who have cared for me. Ida is well, but has her limitations too.
